The ministry is responsible for: developing and evaluating curriculum; teacher development and certification; supporting students with diverse learning needs; funding and supporting school boards; First Nations, Métis and Inuit and Francophone education; and overseeing basic education policy and regulations.RoleIn this dynamic position you will work closely with the Correspondence Unit Manager as the Editor/Writer is responsible for ensuring that all correspondence prepared for the Minister’s/Deputy Minister’s signature is of the highest quality and conforms to their respective standards of style, formatting and language/tone. Working with colleagues in the team, this position is accountable for the timely processing and efficient handling of correspondence on behalf of the Minister and Deputy Minister.Some key responsibilities will include:

  • Works with the unit manager and colleagues in the Executive Correspondence Unit to develop processes that are efficient, effective and result in the highest possible quality of service for the Minister and Deputy Minister.
  • Remains continually receptive to and aware of opportunities for improvements to internal processes
  • Works with divisional Action Request coordinators to obtain information in a timely fashion
  • Stays informed of and shares information about changes to preferred style, revisions to standard responses etc.
  • Uses judgement to make informed decisions when editing composed responses, dealing with sensitive of confidential materials and interacting with ministerial and departmental contacts and colleagues within the ministry.
  • Demonstrates teamwork and customer service skills to ensure goals are met and positive relationships are built and maintained
  • Works independently within the scope of responsibilities and with the guidance of supervisor, particularly on issues outside of the scope of this position.
  • Composes accurate, insightful, appropriate and grammatically correct responses.
  • Working knowledge of main responsibilities and overall composition of government.
  • (When assuming Acting Manager duties)
  • Works within established processes to assign incoming correspondence to Assistant Deputy Minister’s Offices for action.
  • Provides technical expertise and advice to the department regarding production, writing and editing of correspondence.
  • Processes Action Requests assigned to the Executive Correspondence Unit according to priority and strives to maintain a high on-time rate for all Action Request files.
QualificationsPositions require a university graduation in a related field such as Public Administration supplemented by two years of progressively responsible and related experience; or equivalent as described belowEquivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Experience/knowledge in the following are considered as assets:
  • Degree or diploma in English, journalism, professional writing, or a related field
  • Experience writing and editing a variety of materials, especially in a government setting
  • Strong working knowledge of government processes, function, and roles
  • Intermediate to Advanced ARTS skills
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills, especially Word
  • Strong capacity to adapt to change and contribute to the development and continuous improvement of internal processes

  • Systems Thinking – The position requires an awareness of the ministry, other divisions, stakeholders, and other Ministries impacted by division operations, including relevant organizations, committees, advisory groups, and representatives. The position must also understand Ministry business plan goals, organization structure, and priorities and cross-ministry initiatives, including understanding of the provincial education system (Kindergarten to Grade 12), education issues, and the Ministrys position on past and current education issues.
  • Creative Problem Solving – The position requires significant analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to quickly analyze diverse issues and integrate strategies to respond and provide effective and timely advice.
  • Develop Networks – This position requires strong interpersonal communication and consultation skills to build and maintain a collaborative networks and cooperative environment with ministry staff and stakeholders. This position must work independently, as well as contribute effectively to a team environment.
Salary$2,556.10- $3,355.81 bi-weekly ($66,714.21 – $87,586.64 per year)NotesHours of work are Monday – Friday 8:15am – 4:30pm, 36.25 hours/week).
