Employment Opportunity: Finance DirectorFort Chipewyan is the longest continuously inhabited settlement in Alberta. There would be a preference for the Finance Manager role to be based in Fort Chipewyan but for the right candidate we are comfortable considering remote/hybrid options. The person in this position must have convenient access to senior staff and leadership residing in Fort Chipewyan.Position Summary: We are seeking an ambitious and talented Finance Director with strong financial, interpersonal and leadership skills who is analytical, highly organized and possesses impeccable attention to detail.The Finance Director will be responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of the Fort Chipewyan Metis Nation, while also doing hands-on day to day data entry in our project based bookkeeping software. You will ensure that we are operating efficiently and effectively to meet our organization’s fiduciary goals. In this role you will work closely with multiple key stakeholders such as the Board of Directors, Chief Executive Officer, Lands and Regulatory Director, and the Metis community.What you will be doing:

  • Preparing quarterly and annual financial statements for the Board of Directors and leading the annual external audit;
  • Overseeing the annual organizational budget process in conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer;
  • Analyze and track budgets and cashflow projections for all programs, projects and activities;
  • Preparing financial statements and reports to meet program, project, as well as industry partner and funder reporting requirements;
  • Managing and continuously updating and enhancing financial and accounting business practices, policies and procedures;
  • Managing and conducting month end and year end close procedures, reporting and remittances based on set schedules and defined timelines;
  • Managing, overseeing and doing day-to-day bookkeeping functions including all aspects of accounts receivable and accounts payable, as well as oversight of and input for the contract payroll provider.
What we are looking for:
  • Four+ years of progressive experience in accounting, finance management, bookkeeping and support;
  • Relevant post-secondary degree (i.e., accounting, business administration) or equivalent on-the-job experience;
  • Project based financial management and reporting experience;
  • Strong technical aptitude with advanced Excel skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Extensive experience and knowledge of accounting principles, systems and procedures, accounting software, budgets, and internal controls;
  • A friendly, outgoing personality and high comfort level communicating with suppliers, team members, funders, industry and client representatives;
  • Demonstrated creative, analytical and critical thinking skills;
  • Strong organizational skills with proven ability to plan, prioritize and execute on multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong presentation skills;
  • Self-motivated and results oriented, drive and initiative;
  • Demonstrated honesty and integrity and a clear understanding of confidentiality;
  • Genuine interest in the Fort Chipewyan Metis Nation’s goals, community, and culture.
Other requirements:
  • Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check;
  • CPR/First Aid certification, or the willingness to obtain training as per policy;
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and driver’s abstract with a preference for a valid Class 4 driver’s license and driver’s abstract – subject to Board of Directors recommendation and approval
Benefits and Compensation Highlights:
  • The salary range for this role is $110 000 - $130 000 yearly, dependent on education and experience.
  • Full-time position with typical office hours consisting of 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday however flexibility will be required for occasional work on evenings and weekends (with encouragement and support for a work-life balance)
  • The position is ideally located in Fort Chipewyan, however specific location and arrangements are negotiable for the right candidate.
  • Preference is for an employee relationship however a contractor relationship may be considered and is negotiable for the right candidate.
  • Northern Living Allowance – if work location is Fort Chipewyan. If relocating to Fort Chip Staff Housing can be arranged.
