Job Description

Are you a self-driven team leader Do you have skills in airport, facility, road maintenance or construction If so, consider this position in the community of Fort Severn with the Transportations Remote Airports Office of the Ministry of TransportationThe OfficeThe Ministry of Transportations Remote Airports Office in Thunder Bay operates 29 airports. These are located in Ontarios far north, extending from the Manitoba border on the west to Hudsons Bay on the north and to the Quebec border on the east. Except for Pickle Lake and Armstrong, these airports serve aboriginal communities, which have no all-weather road access to the rest of Ontario. The day to day operations includes working in cooperation with Transport Canada, Safety & Regulatory Compliance, Environment, and Operations Support. Airport Operations is also responsible for building and facility maintenance, working in cooperation with NAV Canada and air carriers to ensure the safety of the airport, runways, facilities and the people who utilize them.The DivisionProvincial Highways Management – Operations provides leadership for the construction, operation, maintenance and rehabilitation of the provincial highway network, remote northern airports, and provincial ferry services in addition to administering other functions related to the safe and reliable operation of the provincial highway network across the province.Why work for the Ontario Public ServiceThe Ontario Public Service (OPS) is one of the largest employers in the province, employing more than 60,000 people. What can I expect to do in this roleIn this role, you will:
  • Direct, supervise and perform a variety of maintenance tasks within an airport setting
  • Operate a remote airport facility including airstrip, airport buildings and equipment
  • Supervise the construction and repairs of runways, roads, fencing and brush clearing
  • Perform maintenance (changing fluids, lubricating, making adjustments to components)
How do I qualifyMandatory:
  • You have a restricted radio operator (air) license or ability to obtain
Equipment Operation Skills:
  • You have demonstrated ability to operate heavy equipment (packer, bulldozer, loader, grader and dump truck), and small equipment (chainsaw, welder, circular saw, drill press and grinder).
Technical Knowledge & Skills:
  • You have knowledge of and experience in airport operations and maintenance procedures.
  • You have knowledge of health and safety practices and policies as per the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • You have the Ability to perform minor repairs to buildings, service equipment.
  • You have experience servicing and maintaining airport equipment and tires.
  • You have demonstrated basic computer skills to perform daily administrative duties in order to record, document and track required data (examples can be but not limited to runway condition reporting, fuel and lubricant usage reports, requisitioning materials and equipment parts, labour and equipment time sheets).
Leadership Skills:
  • You have demonstrated supervisory and administrative skills to provide leadership to the Assistant Foreperson and unclassified site staff.
  • You have the ability to apply decision making skills
  • You have public relations and communication skills to address safety concerns and inquiries by the general public.
