Nova Scotia Fishing Hatcheries - YouTubeThe Fisheries Technician, under the supervision of the Fraser’s Mills Fish Hatchery Supervisor, will assist in the rearing and distribution of brook trout, rainbow trout, brown trout and Atlantic salmon to enhance the Province’s sport fishery. The Fisheries Technician will also assist in the implementation of programs directed towards the management of the Province’s inland sport fishery.Primary AccountabilitiesOn site duties include:

  • Feeding fish.
  • Cleaning rearing units.
  • Carries out fin‑fish husbandry practices.
  • Use and maintenance of aquaculture equipment.
Fish distribution involves driving three- and five-ton trucks to sites across the Province and management activities involve watershed/ creel surveys, wild fish collections and public information events.Qualifications and ExperienceThis may be the right job for you if you have the following skills and qualifications:
  • College/vocational diploma in a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in fish hatchery production techniques including fish husbandry, data collection and assessment.
  • Experience in the operation of motor vehicles, small boats, and aquaculture/fisheries management equipment.
  • Candidates must be proficient in and around lakes, rivers and streams (swimming ability would be an asset)
  • A valid driver’s license is required. Air brakes endorsement for the required drivers licence would be an asset and will be required for the job.
  • Currently have, or be willing to obtain, Standard Level First Aid/CPR and WHMIS

  • Requires the ability to lift and carry heavy loads over rough terrain for prolonged periods in a variety of weather conditions.
  • You will be required to work for extended hours, and some weekends.
