Job DescriptionThe class 3 Lead Operator maintains water/wastewater treatment, processing, disposal and testing equipment in water/wastewater treatment facility to purify water to meet permit and operational requirements. Is fully qualified to perform the most complex functions and may lead the work of others.Primary Duties:

1. Leads shift activities in the operation of automatic and semi-automatic machines and related equipment including pumps, engines, generators, valves, gates, mixers, conveyors, blowers, chemical feed equipment, sludge processing equipment used to treat water to drinking water standards. Makes independent decisions concerning process control changes. Directs the activities of other operators assigned to the shift. Trains operators in plant procedures and practices through the use of the “On The Job” training program;
2. Monitors flow meters, gauges, flow ratios, pressures and related controls through instrument panels, computer terminals and programmable logic control units in assigned area;
3. Monitors and records operating conditions observations and data in a shift log;
4. Ensures conformance to process specifications. Diagnoses basic operational problems and takes corrective action per procedure. Verifies and reports suspected malfunctions and variances to supervisor and takes corrective actions;
5. Performs routine and preventative maintenance and maintenance related items as assigned;
6. Performs field tests (chemical, physical and biological) in order to pace chemical dosages for process control units or alter unit processes. Samples sludge and solid streams for determination of solids balancing;
7. Monitors process chemical supplies daily and places or adjusts chemical orders to insure continued plant operations;
8. Performs manual labor including emptying of lime grit hoppers cleaning lime slakers, cleaning Actiflo lamella tubes and cleaning process equipment, facilities and grounds as required;
9. Performs minor maintenance including, but not limited to, routine preventive maintenance, lubrication and minor adjustments as required;
10. Operates vehicles for plant operational purposes;
11. Practices good housekeeping in assigned area and properly disposes of waste according to safety and environmental policies.
12. Other duties as assigned.
