Job Description

ELIGIBILITY FOR THIS COMPETITION IS RESTRICTED TO STEP 1 CANDIDATES INCLUDING OPS ALOC AND OCAA LAWYERS living or working within 125 km of this location. Note: Eligible lawyers from outside the Area of Search may apply but will not be entitled to relocation or travel expenses for the transfer as set out below.Step 1: All regular/fixed-term OCAA and ALOC lawyers on staff, current Redeployment List Members and current Articling Student Hireback Pool Members.Step 2: In the absence of qualified applicants at Step 1 the competition may be reposted so that external applicants or non-members of the above-mentioned groups would then be eligible to apply.The Ministry of the Attorney General, Criminal Law Division (North Region), offers an opportunity in the North Region for an experienced lawyer to assist in the prosecution of cannabis and driving offences.Each application must be sent individually. Collective applications will not be accepted. Please quote the Job ID on your application.What can I expect to do in this roleDuties will include:

  • Conducting or assisting the trial Crown with the various facets of the cannabis and driving offences
  • Performing case management functions, and conducting prosecutions for criminal and quasi-criminal offences in the
Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice
  • Providing professional advice to police and related agencies on multifaceted and/or complicated criminal matters
  • Drafting indictments
  • Acting as senior counsel in prosecutions
  • Working cooperatively with other justice sector partners
  • Occasional travel (land or air) may be required to various locations within the Province
How do I qualifyMandatory
  • Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Valid Ontario Class G Drivers license
Knowledge and Skills
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge and experience in prosecuting cannabis and drinking and driving offences. Criminal
Code of Canada, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, criminal law procedure, rules of evidence and case law
  • Proven judgment and analytical ability to determine appropriate legal remedies
  • Knowledge and understanding of the role and function of a prosecutor in the criminal justice system in Ontario
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, presentation and communications skills
  • Competency using computer technology
  • Ability and willingness to travel to various locations within the North Region and or Province
