While in this role, you will have the opportunity to support the Prosthetic (e.g. artificial limbs) and Orthotic (e.g. braces) services provided to both inpatient and outpatient clients, and work collaboratively with health care professionals in the fabrication, design, and repair of all devices.The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a two (2) year Diploma as an Orthotic and Prosthetic Technician, from an accredited college. Current Certificate as a Registered Prosthetic Technician (RTP), Registered Orthotic Technician (RTO), or both is preferred. Design, engineer and fabricate all orthotic devices for individuals with major musculoskeletal impairments. Design and engineer all prosthetic devices for individuals with upper and/or lower extremity amputations.REPORTING:Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Outpatient Rehabilitation Programs and under the supervision of the Coordinator, Rehab Business Development.DUTIES:

  • Conduct a thorough examination of the patient and review relevant medical history.
  • Evaluate the patient by observing gait, coordination, present device as required, and other physical characteristics to supplement the history and physical examination.
  • Provide information to the patient, family, and involved health care professionals regarding potential advantages and disadvantages of a device to ensure understanding of the treatment plan and cooperation of the individuals involved.
  • Develop a treatment protocol for the specific patient by reviewing the data obtained to determine a specific device recommendation and plan for its use.
  • Obtain and record appropriate measurements and other data from the patient to produce the recommended device.
  • Replicate the patient’s body or body segments to provide an accurate anatomical impression to be used in fabrication of an orthotic or prosthetic device.
  • Provide continuing patient care to ensure proper fit and function of the orthotic or prosthetic device by periodic evaluation.
  • Work collaboratively with others engaged in patient management (e.g. Physicians, Allied Health, family members, and funding agencies).
  • Select appropriate materials and components based on patient criteria to ensure optimum strength, durability, and function.
  • Repair and maintain existing devices.
  • Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  • Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  • Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  • Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  • Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION AND TRAINING:
  • Minimum of a four (4) year Bachelor’s Degree in a Biological Science field (e.g. Kinesiology, Nursing, Biomechanics, Biology, or Engineering) from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of a two (2) year specialization in a clinical program from a Canadian Board for Certification of Prosthetists and Orthotists (CBCPO) accredited college.
  • Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the CBCPO, Canadian Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists (CAPO), and their respective provincial association (e.g. Ontario Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists (OAPO)).
  • Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Six (6) months of relevant experience is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload
  • Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Terminology.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor students and support personnel.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in general health care and community resources.
PERSONAL SUITABILITY:
  • Successful Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
  • Ability to be trained on equipment / software within Rehab Engineering Department (e.g. 3-D Scanner and Design Software).
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Demonstrated professionalism in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
  • Demonstrated positive work record and good attendance record.
  • Ability to meet the physical and sensory demands of the job.
  • Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with health care providers and patients.
