Job Description

Job descriptionSummary of PositionUnder the supervision of the Youth Program Overnight Coordinator, the Youth Programs Overnight Support Worker will provide leadership and supervision to the NEST Warming Centre. The Overnight Support Worker will assist in overnight shelter and warming centre services and programming, as well as acting as a resource and role model for youth clients accessing the NEST Warming Centre.Key ResponsibilitiesPROGRAM FACILITATION

  • Motivate youth by using enthusiasm, energy and positive reinforcement;
  • Encourage youth input into service delivery;
  • Interview youth presenting with problems such as homelessness, personal and family adjustment challenges, difficulty with finances, unemployment, lack of food, addictions, and physical and mental impairments to determine nature and degree of problem;
  • Refer youth to community resources and other organizations and provide appropriate follow up to ensure that their needs are being met
  • Create images, videos, and posts for social media
  • Responsible for supervising youth during onsite and offsite activities and programs, delegating tasks to youth program staff when applicable;
  • Participate in program development activities and weekly team meetings by communicating ideas, issues and options;
OVERNIGHT SUPPORT
  • Maintain order in the warming centre;
  • Coordinate the evening and morning routine for overnight residents;
  • Walk through the warming centre;
  • Check the grounds and the parking lot;
  • Work cooperatively with volunteers and other overnight staff;
  • Log-in warming centre clients in the evening and overnight and complete required paperwork
  • Respond to any emergencies in a fast and efficient manner;
  • Tidy up the centre and clean as necessary (including laundry);
  • Wake overnight residents at the scheduled time and ensure that the floor is vacant by 8am;
  • Admit morning staff and volunteers and assist with morning routine when necessary;
  • Pass on any relevant information to day staff;
  • Complete general tasks as assigned by the Youth Program Overnight Coordinator
Qualifications and Skills
  • Diploma or degree in the social services or a related field of study
  • Empathy with an ability to relate with at risk youth
  • Demonstrated ability to mobilize youth to develop new skills, and motivate youth to participate in activities that will improve their quality of life
  • Knowledge of community resources, especially supports for homeless youth
  • Knowledge of native culture and traditions would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of confidentiality requirements of both the Centre and client information.
  • One year of experience working in the social service sector, gained either through employment or student placement
Contract length: 7 monthsPart-time hours: 10+ per weekJob Types: Part-time, Temporary, ContractSalary: $20.00 per hourCOVID-19 considerations:All clients and staff are expected to wear a mask and wash hands when on site. High touch areas cleaned regularly. At the door supply pick-up is available to clients during the day.
