Here, you can: shape the future of insurance, win as a team, and grow with us.About the roleWe’re looking for an Underwriter to join our Fleet & Garage team in Ottawa or Sudbury!As a Fleet & Garage Underwriter, you are responsible for underwriting Commercial Auto accounts in order to contribute to a profitable portfolio of business. You will use superior customer service and sales skills while making good business decisions quickly. Excellent data entry and computer skills are required to facilitate the fast-paced profitable sales environment.What you’ll do here:

  • Assess, evaluate and negotiate less to moderate complex risks
  • Apply effective pricing and underwriting strategies in accordance with Company guidelines and personal underwriting authority limits
  • Within your level of authority, quote, negotiate, sell, and authorize the acceptance of moderate to complex new business, renewals, and endorsements to develop and retain profitable business according to the business plan established for the department
  • Participate in broker visits, insurance industry functions and marketing events in support of broker relationship development
  • Arrange reinsurance if and when required
  • Work closely to develop and maintain positive business partnerships with brokers, reinsurers and co-workers
  • Answer inquiries, develop and monitor business with brokers through visits, discussions, and correspondence
  • Use the computer system for policy inquiry, electronic filing, underwriting and rating transactions
  • Foster cooperative broker relationships to identify and develop sales opportunities
  • Some travel may be required
QualificationsWhat you bring to the table:
  • One [1] plus years of Commercial Lines Underwriting experience preferred
  • Solid understanding of the Ontario Auto Policy and all endorsements
  • University Degree preferred or equivalent relevant work experience
  • Chartered Insurance Professional [CIP] designation preferred or in progress
  • Maintain a current understanding of all relevant Commercial Underwriting guides and related instructions
  • Awareness of local community conditions and insurance issues
  • Great communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Strong negotiating skills and business savvy
  • Initiative and ability to work under pressure
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft office products and computer tools
  • Fleet and garage experience is an asset
