Our 6,000 faculty and staff foster a vibrant, purpose-driven community, that celebrated 200 years of academic excellence in 2018.Job SummaryThe Division of Animal Care provides professional services and oversight for the Faculty of Medicine’s Animal Care facilities. Reporting to the Managers of Carleton Animal Care Facility or LSRI Animal Care Facility, the Animal Care Technician will work in a team environment and perform animal husbandry and technical duties for a variety of species, including rats and mice.Key Responsibilities

  • Provide food, water, bedding, environmental enrichment, and specialized diets according to established procedures. Clean, disinfect and maintain animal rooms and equipment according to standard operating procedures.
  • Perform daily health assessments on animals and submit health reports to veterinary staff.
  • Maintain rodent breeding colonies including record keeping, pairing, weaning, sexing, etc.
  • Administer oral or topical medications, IP, SQ, IM and IV injections, or other diagnostic/therapeutic procedures as directed by veterinarian.
  • Work is conducted in a highly regulated environment following established guidelines and procedures involved with specialized equipment and housing including sterile housing, Bio-containment Level 2, Individually Ventilated Cages, animal transfer stations and Class II BSC.
  • Empty cage wash and bottle wash machines, restock clean equipment area, assist in unloading supplies, and perform other technical duties as required.
NoteThe current schedule for this role includes regular weekend shifts, subject to change based on operational requirements. The Division of Animal Care is responsible for live-animal husbandry, therefore considered an essential service and runs 365 days per year. As such, occasional holiday and weekend shifts are required as needed. Compensation will be in consultation with the collective agreement.Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.The successful candidate may be required to comply with Canadian Immunization Guide: Workers with Occupational Exposure to Animals or Materials from Animal (e.g. Tetanus), as directed by the Department.Required Qualifications
  • Registered Veterinary Technician diploma (CVMA accredited program) or CALAS Registry Board Examination RLAT certification.
  • One to three years’ previous related experience.
  • Demonstrated communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.

  • Work experience in lab animal care.
  • Computer skills.
