Our 6,000 faculty and staff foster a vibrant, purpose-driven community, that celebrated 200 years of academic excellence in 2018.Job SummaryThe Aquatron Laboratory offers services to the Dalhousie Community including animal care of aquatic animals and large seawater mesocosm tanks for a range of experiments. In the past, the Aquatron Laboratory has worked with a range of species from salmon and sharks to sea turtles. Reporting to the Aquatron Manager, the Aquatron Operations Technician is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Aquatron’s aquatic life support system.Key Responsibilities

  • Operation and maintenance of freshwater supply system, seawater supply system and the Recycling Aquatic Systems (RAS) and record keeping.
  • Responsible for changing broken, worn out or failed components in the water treatment or aquatic life support systems, and maintenance of components in the water treatment or aquatic life support systems.
  • Coordinate and liaise with other university staff in the operation and maintenance of the Aquatron Laboratory.
  • Help running or operating experiments by assisting in experimental system set-up, adjusting physical parameters of an experiment, collecting data, assisting in deployment of large experimental apparatus, assisting in the movement of large numbers of fish in and out of the facility.
  • From time to time, may transport goods and equipment throughout the province of Nova Scotia including fish shipments to and from the facility.
NoteDue to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.Required QualificationsDiploma from recognized industrial program (plumbing, electrical or, building controls), Advanced Diploma in Aquaculture, or Bachelor of Science/Engineering/Aquaculture with 3 to 5 years’ experience working in a similar research facility, aquaculture hatchery, large commercial aquarium or installation and operation of large (>15 hp) pumps, UVs and sand filters. Must demonstrate knowledge and experience in the operation and maintenance of large pumps, building control systems, sand filters and UV disinfection systems. Must have strong mechanical, communication, organization skills. Experience working in an industrial environment will be important. Current WHMIS and/or fall protection certification an asset. Heavy lifting of fish feed bags on a daily basis (20 kg) is a key responsibility of this position. Knowledge and experience working in Claris FileMaker or basic scripting and coding would be considered an asset.
