Halifax Public Libraries invites INTERNAL and EXTERNAL applications for the permanent, full-time position of Audio Visual Events Specialist located at Halifax Central Library. This is a unionized position. People of all ages and backgrounds gather in this vibrant space.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESThe Audio Visual Events Specialist based at Halifax Central Library provides audio-visual and lighting training and support to staff, community partners, and event clients. They operate and troubleshoot the equipment and oversee its use, maintenance and replacement. In addition, they provide related expertise, instruction, and programs to the public in the use of Media Studio equipment, audio and video recording and production. Events team members work a flexible schedule throughout the week, including after-hours shifts.As Audio Visual Events Specialist, you will:

  • Provide live sound, video, and lighting support for library programs and events
  • Work with staff, community partners, event clients, and external audio-visual providers to determine the audio-visual requirements for programs and events
  • Provide customer service to Media Studio users
  • Develop and deliver training and support for staff in all branches in the use of in-house audio-visual equipment
  • Develop procedures for maintenance and cleaning of in-house audio-visual equipment
  • Complete small in-house repairs and regular maintenance of audio-visual equipment
  • Identify upcoming service requirements and make recommendations for audio-visual upgrades, maintenance and repair at library branches.
  • Work closely with the Library Information Technology (IT) department to ensure that A/V systems and equipment are integrated with overall technology plans.
  • Maintain relationships with external audio-visual providers for the purpose of maintenance and repair, and audio-visual services.
  • Act as a resource for the Media Studio
  • Act as Person in Charge in library branch(es)
DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKESEducation & Experience:
  • Diploma in audio engineering and recording, audio-visual technology or a related field and four (4) years of related experience
OR
  • Completion of Grade Twelve (12) or equivalent & six (6) years of related experience
Requirements:
  • Read and write English
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated ability to provide instruction and training
  • Intermediate technology skills
  • Experience with projectors, screens, LCDs/ TVs, sound systems, audio equipment, event lighting
  • Knowledge of audio recording techniques, equipment and software
  • Knowledge of video recording techniques, equipment and software
Assets:
  • Experience with AMX, Crestron, and Biamp systems
  • Ability to demonstrate the use of a musical instrument in songwriting (e.g. guitar or keyboard)
  • Knowledge of music theory and songwriting techniques
  • Knowledge of individuals, groups and services within the local music or audio recording industry
  • Experience in program planning and delivery
  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • Fluency in a second language
TRAVEL
  • This job requires candidates who can work a flexible schedule including early morning, late evenings and weekends. As the regular hours often fall outside normal transit schedules, candidates MUST have access to reliable transportation.
