Our 6,000 faculty and staff foster a vibrant, purpose-driven community, that celebrated 200 years of academic excellence in 2018.Job SummaryThe Vice-President Research & Innovation (VPRI) oversees the university’s research and innovation enterprise, which administers over $214M annually in research funding. Reporting to the Vice President Research & Innovation, the Chief of Staff is responsible for providing strategic advice to the VPRI on issues and policies impacting the research enterprise at the University, managing performance against the key performance indicators for the research strategic direction, and administrative management of the Office of the VP Research and Innovation. The Chief of Staff takes a lead role in identifying strategic issues and activities, acting as a resource on research-related matters and coordinating efforts to maximize the University’s research impact. The Chief of Staff communicates regularly with senior representatives from academic institutions, provincial and federal government departments and other research partners.Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic counsel to the Vice-President Research & Innovation, Associate/Assistant Vice-Presidents Research and other senior University representatives on research issues impacting the institution.
  • Project manage the university’s research strategic direction and provide counsel to the VPRI on Key Performance Indicators and evaluation of the strategic plan.
  • Maintain close working relationships with the Office of Government and Global Relations so as to advise the VPRI on emerging issues involving all levels of government, and with Communications, Marketing and Creative Services to ensure broad and appropriate communications about research and innovation at Dalhousie.
  • Ensure the VPRI is informed of all major research issues and initiatives internal and external to the university, gathering intelligence and undertaking environmental scans of major initiatives and developments both on campus and externally.
  • Manage and work to address the variety of challenging or problematic issues and inquiries that arise on a daily basis.
  • Undertake and/or coordinate special projects as requested by the VPRI.

Experience working in a university research environment is essential. Must be a proactive problem-solver, able to work in a deadline-driven environment while still exercising diplomacy and tact. Excellent communication skills (oral and written) are required. The ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team player is essential. Excellent judgment, ethical standards, and strategic thinking ability are essential. Strong organizational, analytical and time management skills are required including the ability to manage multiple tasks while paying attention to detail.
