Requisition ID: 136295Opportunity Type: PermanentEstimated Annual Salary: 350,000 - 400,000Type of Remuneration: AFP - Academic Funding PlanAbout the OpportunityThe East Coast Forensic Hospital (ECFH) is in Dartmouth Nova Scotia. It is a Provincial Service affiliated with the Mental Health and Addictions Program of Nova Scotia Health. The Forensic Section is also an academic hospital affiliated with the Dalhousie Department of Psychiatry.ECFH is the largest psychiatric hospital in the Atlantic region and the largest east of Montreal. There are 60 inpatient rehabilitation beds, 24 beds for Forensic Assessment and Correction Treatment (FACT unit), two bungalows on the premises, and a community program for patients on conditional discharge. The service is also responsible for the delivery of Correction Health Services, with hospitalists and psychiatrists delivering in- person and virtual care to all correction facilities in the province.Responsibilities

  • To provide forensic care. Also, to oversee the development and implementation of a Royal College Subspecialty residency program in Forensic Psychiatry.
  • Reporting to the ECFH Clinical Director and Head, Section of Forensic & Correction Psychiatry
Major ResponsibilitiesClinical:
  • Provide forensic psychiatric care to the services and units at the East Coast Forensic Hospital utilizing pharmacological & psychosocial treatment interventions as per current standards of practice. Examples include Court Ordered Assessments, rehabilitation programs, acute and long-term psychiatric treatment, and correction psychiatry.
  • Provide psychiatric care to persons in custody within Correction Health Services.
  • Act as consultant and leader of a multi-disciplinary team that involves psychologists, social workers, case coordinators, occupational therapists, recreational therapists, and nurses.
  • Provide submissions to the Criminal Code Review Board (CCRB) including assessment of patient readiness for different levels of privileges and care.
  • Take part in a psychiatry on-call schedule as required within the program unless specifically exempted.
Academic:
  • Establish a Royal College accredited subspecialty training program in Forensic Psychiatry
  • Involved in the didactic education and clinical supervision of residents and medical students as part of the academic mission of the Dalhousie Department of Psychiatry
  • Research interests are encouraged
  • Membership in academic committees as required.
  • Forensics specialty capacity building for intra-professional staff and nursing teams.
Qualifications
  • FRCPC with Forensic subspecialty training is preferred.
  • Equivalent international training and qualification plus eligibility to sit the FRCPC exams will be considered.
  • Level of experience in Forensic Psychiatry will also be considered.
Remuneration and To Apply
  • The position is funded through an Academic/Alternative Funding Plan. This covers direct and indirect care, virtual care, clinical administration, care coordination, etc.
  • Psychiatric call is remunerated as per department of psychiatry funding mechanism
  • Enhancements based on academic rank are also available
