Department: Natural Resources & RenewablesLocation: Halifax or StellartonType of Employment: PermanentUnion Status: NSGEU - NSPGClosing Date: 7/26/2022 (Applications are accepted until 11:59 PM Atlantic Time)About UsThe Geoscience and Mines Branch of the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables delivers leadership in the management and responsible development of the Province’s mineral resource assets along with scientific support of public health and safety through regional mapping, water resource, and hazard mapping programs. Within the Branch, the Geological Survey Division includes a team of expert geoscientists who are responsible for delivering high quality, timely geoscience data, information, services, and support to a wide range of stakeholders, including all levels of government, industry, academia, and the public.About Our OpportunityAs a Coastal Geologist you will initiate, plan, conduct, and report on projects designed to monitor the Province’s coastlines such as assessment of shorelines and infrastructure at risk to dynamic coastal processes, coastal flooding and erosion, and changes in sea level.This position reports to the Manager of Project Operations with the Geological Survey Division.Primary AccountabilitiesSpecific duties of the position include:

  • Planning and carrying out advanced research on the vulnerability of Nova Scotia’s coastline from coastal flooding and erosion. This research should consider continual processes as well as in response to major coastal storms and human intervention.
  • Developing an understanding of the modern physical coastal environment, beach and nearshore dynamics.
  • Developing an understanding of Quaternary coastal conditions on the basis of sedimentary, morphological, and paleoecological indicators.
  • Assisting coastal communities with climate adaptation planning.
  • Consulting and liaising with varied stakeholders regarding projects being undertaken within the division’s Environmental Geology Program and projects by other organizations.
  • Developing and maintaining databases.
  • Preparing and delivering oral and written reports and maps that communicate project results to the public, industry, and the scientific research community.
  • Supervising and assisting junior staff as required.
This position reports to the Manager of Project Operations.Qualifications and ExperienceThis may be the right opportunity for you if you have a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology, Geoscience, or a related discipline with 5 years’ experience in a Coastal Geologist role; a Master of Science. plus 4 years related experience or a Ph.D. in Science plus 2 years experience.The right candidate has a record of designing and executing successful coastal geoscience field programs with several years’ experience in planning and conducting this research. You have demonstrated experience producing and publishing high-quality scientific and technical reports or products of coastal geoscience research.Knowledge and experience with RTK (Real Time Kinematic) surveying techniques, satellite imagery, drone technologies, coastal geomorphology, coastal flooding, GIS (preferably ArcGIS suite), lidar and aerial-photographic interpretation is required. Quaternary and/or surficial geology knowledge would be valuable. Experience collecting, maintaining, and interpreting geoscience data, and integrating it with other data, and developing value added products is essential. Experience working with municipal planners, government, NGO’s, and academia will be considered an asset.You possess exceptional writing and public presentation skills with a demonstrated ability to work independently. Your strong analytical, project management, organizational, and interpersonal skills will be beneficial in this role.You must possess a valid Class 5 drivers’ license.
