The producer will create journalistic content in innovative and engaging ways that is relevant and reflective of the people who live in the Maritime provinces. The producer will build relationships with people in underserved communities and design initiatives that bring compelling stories and contributors from those communities to the local programming at CBC (audio, video, and text). Sometimes the producer will be responsible for producing their own content, reports and stories. Other times the producer will be coaching and developing content creators from inside and outside of CBC.The position calls for a storyteller with a curiosity about people, who is comfortable working with technology to produce audio, visual and text-based content. While the producer does not lead a dedicated team, they collaborate with journalists and programmers at CBC stations across the Maritime provinces to design the team they need for different projects. The producer must be comfortable working autonomously, building relationships and planning projects. They know how to engage others, how to set goals and use data to measure success. Creativity is a must. So is a commitment to learning from and with others.The community engagement producer will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating and implementing community bureaus in communities.
  • Pitching and producing original journalism that is rooted in community.
  • Working with colleagues to align efforts around an audience growth strategy - identifying the underserved communities, gathering data about the communities and tracking the work being done to reflect the communities.
  • Identifying key underserved communities to establish and/or build relationships with CBC and to pave the way for community programming initiatives.
  • Being a resource to CBC show producers and teams that are planning new community connections for their show. Consulting on tactics and advising on an approach.
  • Identifying, developing and maintaining contacts with community members and groups.
  • Developing and sustaining relationships with creators new to CBC, mentoring and coaching them.
  • Conceiving and developing community content ideas, concepts and multi-platform, multi-program rollouts in collaboration with program producers and the communications and marketing team.
  • Developing digital content including assigning, researching, gathering, writing and/or editing. As required, commissions research, writing, photography and/or shooting.
  • Determining style, tone, line-up and format of the program or project.
  • Planning, organizing, coordinating and implementing the components and/or segments of a content series or community project.
  • Tracking the costs associated with community initiatives and keeping them within budget.
The Community engagement producer will work under the supervision of the Senior Manager, Content Growth and Development.The work can be done from any of the CBC stations in the Maritimes: Halifax, Cape Breton, Moncton, Saint John, Fredericton, or Charlottetown.We are looking for a candidate with the following:
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to prioritize.
  • A proven ability to identify and engage audiences in digital spaces through targeted content plans.
  • Experience connecting with external stakeholders and community organizations.
  • Experience working in journalism or media content creation.
  • Producer with some experience of bringing creative approaches to content creation.
  • Comprehensive understanding of digital media trends, and what builds engagement among different demographics on different media including social media.
  • Team leadership or coaching experience.
  • Project planning skills and experience managing budgets.
  • Independent, self-motivated combined with the ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Inclusive of others.
  • Familiar with the programming of CBC.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills. Able to establish trust and maintain strong relationships.
