You are willing to learn skills including basic bicycle mechanics and enjoy getting your hands dirty! You enjoy creating fun and positive experiences and working with diverse community groups and people of all ages.You thrive in fast-paced environments. Your Focus - Community Programming Summer Student   This dual research and community programming role allows for synthesizing research findings into practical community-based initiatives. This role is part of the Mitacs Accelerate program, with academic support provided by the Universities of Dalhousie and Acadia. In this position, you will be working on a research project that is investigating strategies and approaches for designing and implementing sustainable community-centered programs. The research aims to identify how sustainable community-centered programs effectively empower employed students, address local community needs, and have long-lasting effects. The research will help the EAC and other community organizations to design better community-centered programming that is beneficial to all stakeholders for years to come. The other aspect of this role will be providing programming support and delivery for on-the-ground community-centered bike repair programs to increase equitable access to cycling opportunities. Most of the time will be spent in communities delivering programming.The successful candidate must be passionate about mobility-justice, and active transportation. No prior bike repair experience is required, all training is provided.  Key Responsibilities (shared with one other student): 

  • Analyze data collected from the literature review, surveys, case studies, and interviews to identify key themes  
  • Develop recommendations for sustainable, community-centered programs  
  • Assist in the setup and delivery of the Pop-Up Bike Hub Mini programming   
  • Assist community members with basic bike repairs    
  • Develop and conduct surveys
  • Build and conduct case studies
  • Co-write research outcomes
  • Assist the Community Active Transportation Officer to run Welcoming Wheels programming (Tuesday 5-9pm)  
  • Maintain a safe, welcoming, and comfortable work environment   
  • Keep accurate records and reports of sessional information 
  • Participate in leader training and professional development opportunities as required     
  • Participate in workplace orientation   
  • Attend bi-weekly transportation team meetings when able 
  • Participate in EAC culture and events
Applicants must be: 
  • Currently enrolled at Acadia University or Dalhousie University (as per academic partnership) or 
  • A recent graduate from either of the above Universities (within two years of graduation), and 
  • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident or international student over the age of 18 
Qualifications:  
  • Excellent research skills
  • A passion for mobility justice and active transportation  
  • Excellent communication skills: networking, facilitation, writing  
  • Proven skills as a relationship builder  
  • Diplomatic, creative, optimistic, with a team-oriented approach  
  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices  
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team and complete self-directed work when required 
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or community sector  
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to high-caliber program delivery, development, and evaluation  
  • Experience delivering programs to young adults, youth, and children.  
  • Willingness to learn basic bike mechanics  
  • Computer literate in Word, Excel, internet, email and file/data management  
  •  Clear Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry Check 
Working Conditions: 
  • Interns will work from a variety of locations throughout HRM traveling by electric bike 
  • Bike Again (DIY community bike repair space) 5664 Charles St for PUBH mini prep
  • Office space will be provided at the EAC office at 2705 Fern Lane  
  • Willing to work some regular evenings and occasional weekends and travel within HRM or Nova Scotia  
  • Intern may occasionally travel with the Pop-Up Bike Hub across the province – transportation and accommodations provided  
Physical Requirements: 
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, lift and move objects weighing up to 40 lbs. (e.g.: putting bikes on stands) 
  • Ability to set up and organize tools and supplies 
  • Ability to ride a bicycle or similar
