OFI currently administers four key ocean programs: i) the Safe and Sustainable Development of the Ocean Frontier, a $94M Canada First Research Excellence Fund program; ii) the Ocean Graduate Excellence Network, a co-curricular program designed to enhance graduate students’ employability in multiple sectors; iii) Ocean School (partnership with National Film Board of Canada), an educational program for students in grades 5-12; iv) and the North Atlantic Carbon Observatory, what could potentially be a global ocean-carbon initiative involving international governments, private sector, and philanthropic organizations/NGOs. For more information about OFI, visit ofi.ca.Job SummaryReporting to the Director of Public Affairs and Communications, the Creative Communications Specialist is responsible for designing and implementing communications tactics that support OFI’s public relations and communications’ plans and strategies. The Creative Communications Specialist will also liaise with the central Communications and Marketing departments at Dalhousie University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and University of Prince Edward Island, as well as with partner institutions internationally.Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development of public relations and communication strategies and plans, working with the OFI public relations and communications team.
  • Provide visual solutions (print and on-line), from concept to production for OFI and its partner organizations, such as, but not limited to, brochures, presentations, webpages, information sheets, signage, etc., including scheduling design projects and defining budget requirements.
  • Generate, schedule, and publish daily social media and website content, and arrange for and oversee production of photography, videography, and other specialized services.
  • Support the promotion and implementation of events and conferences.
  • Stay apprised of current trends and new developments in visual design, and advise staff and other stakeholders on best practices in design strategies and implementation.
  • Adhere to OFI brand guidelines and contribute to internal design style guides as needed; assist in branding of new OFI initiatives and updating brands of existing initiatives as required.

However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.Required QualificationsDiploma in communications, marketing, design, journalism, or a related field with 5 years of related communications design experience. A minimum of 1 year experience with Adobe Creative Suite or similar graphical editing software. Experience presenting design or communication concepts to decision makers. Familiarity working with Microsoft Office suite.Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage workload in a deadline driven environment, while receiving direction and feedback as needed. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills to build relationships. Capacity for creativity and innovation; ability to exercise initiative, resourcefulness, and judgment. Strong attention to detail and superior problem solving, analytical and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to function independently as well as part of a team.AssetsExperience in a large, complex organization. Experience in digital, environmental, print and or web design, as well as in science communication.
