Dalhousie Libraries strives to inspire the creation, exploration, and discovery of knowledge in all forms through user-focused engagement with diverse communities.The Role of the DeanReporting to the Provost and Vice-President Academic, the Dean of Libraries is the senior academic and chief administrator of the Dalhousie Libraries. As a member of Dalhousie’s senior academic and administrative leadership team, the Dean of Libraries contributes to the fulfillment of Dalhousie’s mission and to the management of the University. The Dean promotes excellence in scholarship, research, and service and is responsible for developing the Libraries’ annual budget, overseeing operations, and collaboratively determining appropriate complements of staff and librarians. The Dean is crucial in defining and maintaining the standards, integrity, effectiveness, and efficiency of a complex, multi-campus, research-intensive university libraries system. The Dean also advocates on behalf of the Libraries and actively builds relationships internally and externally with the diverse communities served by the Dalhousie Libraries system.The Ideal CandidateThe Dean must have a progressive vision for academic research library systems and a strong understanding of the related emerging issues and trends. The Dean must have a demonstrated commitment to service excellence, the proven ability to make well-informed decisions, and a successful record of strategic thinking, planning, and management. A strong communicator, listener, and relationship builder, the Dean must be capable of fostering a collegial and respectful environment and playing a leadership role in relation to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. As the leader of a diverse group of staff and faculty spread across multiple sites and campuses, the Dean must serve as a connector, engaging authentically and collegially with individuals at all levels. With skills in change management and an approach that balances the need to innovate with a dedication to maintaining excellent user-centred service delivery, the Dean will be able to lead the Dalhousie Libraries into the next five years.EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

• A minimum master’s level academic qualification in library or information studies or a related field and eligibility for appointment at the rank of Librarian is required;
• A proven record of senior administration and leadership within an academic research library system is required; experience in a similar sized academic institution and/or multi-library system is preferred;
• Proven financial management skills with experience administering multi-million dollar budgets and leading large teams is required;
• Demonstrated and sustained commitment to EDIA as shown through ongoing learning and engagement in these areas, demonstrated knowledge of barriers related to access and inclusion, and leadership experience related to research, policy, or programs to address issues of access and inclusion;
• A demonstrated interest and capacity for conducting research, with an existing research portfolio, is an asset.
