Our 6,000 faculty and staff foster a vibrant, purpose-driven community, that celebrated 200 years of academic excellence in 2018.Job SummaryDalhousie University’s Office of Advancement is responsible for all fundraising and alumni and community engagement activities at the institution. A team of over 90 advancement professionals cultivates relationships with alumni and friends of the university and works with donors to help them achieve personal fulfilment through philanthropic investment. Reporting to the Executive Director of Advancement, Faculty of Medicine the Development Officer discovers, engages, cultivates, solicits, and stewards Faculty of Medicine donors one on one at the mid and major gift level for philanthropic investment in leading medical research and education that is impacting the region and the world.Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and advance relationships with 100 -130 assigned prospective donors. The Development Officer will be in regular contact with these prospective donors and is responsible for deepening engagement and exploring their interest in philanthropic support for Faculty priorities.
  • Solicit assigned prospective major gift donors at the optimal time for the donor. This requires careful judgement, discretion, and diplomacy.
  • Implement comprehensive and strategic donor stewardship plans for assigned donors (acknowledgement, naming, and recognition) and inspire future giving.
  • Compose a variety of written materials, such as donor proposals, whitepapers, slide decks and other collateral to support fundraising strategies. Prepare gift agreements, working with donors, academic leaders, and Advancement Gift Compliance to ensure agreements establish clear criteria and achieve the donor goals.
  • Engage and collaborate with appropriate academic leaders, researchers and key external stakeholders as partners and subject matter experts central to fundraising success. Provide coaching and guidance as appropriate in donor cultivation strategies to maximize a prospective donor’s giving.
NoteThe successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.Required QualificationsUndergraduate Degree with five years’ progressive experience in a fundraising, business development, professional sales, marketing, communications or other relationship intensive work (or an equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. Experience working in a post-secondary education setting considered an asset. Political acumen and maturity are essential qualities in dealing with donors. Diplomacy and sensitivity to the needs and interests of other departments, divisions and units with competing development objectives are also critical skills. Demonstrated experience of leading small-scale projects. Ability to develop people leadership skills. Demonstrated experience developing and writing compelling funding proposals (or similar) to highlight the strongest possible alignment between a project’s social impact and an individual donor’s philanthropic interests.
