Job Description

DSAS is hiring the External Relations Manager for the 2022-2023 term of May 1st, 2022 – April 30, 2023, or September 1st, 2022- April 30th, 2023. DSAS is an organization that seeks to support students in navigating University policies and processes. We deal with academic and Student Code of Conduct cases, as well as those pursuant to other University policies. We participate in facilitating informal and formal resolutions. DSAS is seeking to welcome an incoming team that will work together to support a roster of hard-working advocates in handling an increasing demand for services.Summer Duties

  • The DSAS External Relations Manager has the option to elect to work in the Summer Manager position, for duties see the Summer Manager position;
Fall/Winter Term DutiesExternal Advocacy
  • Take initiative in developing campaigns and projects to benefit DSAS advocates and the student body;
  • Serve on various university committees, for example the Student Code of Conduct Task Force;
  • Meet regularly with the Vice-Provost Student Affairs to identify system issues;
  • Communicate with members of the University including (but not limited to): Vice Provost Student Services, Faculty Deans, AIOs, Student Conflict Office, Office of the Ombudsperson, Human Rights Equity and Harassment Office and Equity Services
  • Serve as the liaison between the Service, the University, and the Ombudsperson;
  • Meet regularly with the Ombudsperson to keep them apprised of systemic issues and ongoing cases of note;
Case Management
  • Assist the Executive Director Internal in managing the DSAS email inbox and assign cases as necessary;
  • Be prepared to take on many cases:
o Take the lead on complex cases as the need arises;o Take on cases due to advocate availability or time constraints;
  • Provide support to volunteer advocates;
  • Facilitate opportunities for external support for advocates (de-briefs, counseling, etc.);
  • Have the ability to delegate duties and/or responsibilities to the other members as needed;
DSU Responsibilities
  • Administer the Service on behalf of the DSU;
  • Liaise with the VPAE concerning administrative and academic issues;
  • Ensure that payroll obligations for Executives is being met;
  • Participate in the Offices Steering Committee;
  • Submits proposal for DSAS draft budget 2022-23 to Offices Steering Committee;
  • Identify areas that DSAS needs support from the DSU to continue to build and grow the service;
  • Assist the DSU with any cases or questions they have received;
  • Ensure the Service operates according to appropriate DSU Bylaws, policies and DSAS Terms of Reference and Operational Policies;
Internal Initiatives
  • Oversee and build capacity of the Translation Project;
  • Coordinate regular executive meetings to discuss ongoing cases and issues;
  • Work with the Education & Outreach Coordinator to identify campaigns and ongoing issues which require outreach;
  • Work with the Policy & Office Coordinator to identify upcoming policy campaigns, reviews, and updates needed;
  • Advertise and coordinate the recruitment and training of Advocates;
  • Plan and administer internal DSAS training in September and January;
  • Be responsible for the training and transitioning of the incoming executives and summer managers.
Qualifications and Skills:Required:
  • Current Schulich School of Law student;
  • Current (or former) DSAS volunteer
Recommended:
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Experience managing volunteers and facilitating large-scale training;
  • Good client-relations skills;
  • Demonstrated ability handling different types of cases (AIO, SDC, Reinstatement, SCOC);
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Self-motivated;
  • Strong commitment to DSAS and DSU mandates;
  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-oppressive practices
The DSU is the External Relations Manager for the 2022-2023 term of May 1st, 2022 – April 30, 2023 at $15.00 per hour for 30hrs weekly during the Fall and Winter term, with the option to elect to work for the Summer Term at $18 per hour for 35hrs weekly.Deadline for Application: April 4th/2022 at noonWe thank all our applicants for taking the time to apply.
