EMERGING ARTIST (Musician) - Canadian MaritimesPlease note that aspects of this position are modified to ensure Health and Safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.This call for Emerging Artists is for applicants residing in or near Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. If you havent received a confirmation of your application within 72 hours, please email jobs@canadianmusicians.coop for support.The Emerging Artist (EA) Program is designed to help young Canadian musicians navigate the next level of their career, whether that is a national tour, preparing for export, or any other major stepping stone from the beginner level to the intermediate. We have roles for singer-songwriters, self-accompanied vocalists, and instrumentalists (including backline performers on bass, drums, keys, guitar, and horns).EAs will get structured training from a variety of industry professionals in navigating the intricacies of the music industry, gaining skills and knowledge crucial for career growth along the way. The primary focus of this program is to provide support for and animate our communities and to build sustainability in our artistic workforce. Hours not spent performing will be occupied with workshops, training, and hands-on activities to prepare EAs for levelling up their business. Some performers may be selected as principal roles in our end-of-summer touring Showcase.Emerging Artist Eligibility:

• Must have their own portable solo performance setup for in-person performance opportunity (battery-powered amplification implements optional, but strongly recommended)
• Must have minimum of 60 minutes of material suitable for performance in public spaces, and be prepared to engage and entertain the public
• Must be prepared to perform for up to 3 hours in length in-person
• Must be willing to engage in online performances of up to 60 minutes

Due to federal funding requirements for this program, successful applicants must be:

• 15–30 years of age on their first day of work
• A Canadian citizen, have a permanent resident card, or be protected under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (there is no requirement to be a student)
• Residing in Canada during the length of the employment.

This program pays minimum wage for your province.Emerging Artist Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform music and provide engaging and high-quality entertainment at summer events such as festivals, community celebrations, tourism initiatives, and agricultural fairs taking place in public and quasi-public spaces within municipalities partnered with the Co-op. (Due to COVID-19, the 2022 Summer Emerging Artist Program will be a blended model of in-person and online activities, subject to local health regulations and guidelines. Participants must be prepared to record and perform remotely—either at home or another location arranged by the artist—such that the quality is acceptable for online video-hosting or streaming).
• Participate in career-related skill-development programs, workshops, rehearsals, and training programs to develop the highest calibre of professional skills and attitudes that will transcend the summer job period.
• Respond to inquiries and interactions via electronic means (e.g., email, Slack, etc.) in a timely and professional manner.
• Maintain professional workplace behaviour and confidentiality when dealing with workplace challenges.
• Complete administrative tasks on time and with accuracy, as assigned.
• Attend functions such as job fairs, networking events, schools, and other approved locations to promote the Co-op, the Summer Emerging Artist Program, and Pre-Professional Program.
• Complete other tasks as assigned.

EA work hours:

• Tuesday to Friday: 10am to 5pm (PST, EST, AST)
• Scheduled performances on evenings and weekends
• Monday: Full day off, no program activities scheduled for artists

The Summer Emerging Artist Program (SEAP) length is 8-16 weeks with the earliest date being early May and the last date being the end of August. (The Pre-Professional Program will be 6-8 weeks, commencing in early July.)Application Requirements:Please upload your artistic resume and cover letter, and include a professional headshot specific to your artist-business, if you have one.Selected candidates must attend an online callback audition and formal job interview.***New for 2022***As part of this application, applicants must provide the following items as part of their application. All items listed below must be included for applications to be considered. NOTE: N/A is an acceptable answer where explicitly specified.

• Up-to-date EPK
• Up-to-date biography (must be at least 200 words)
• Website link
• Links to all social media platforms you currently have
• Discography (if not included in EPK)
• Short summary of target demographic
• List of current download/stream/live show statistics (if more than two years ago, please indicate date of release and general trend between release and now)
• List of all digital platforms your music is currently available on (if you have not released commercially, write N/A).
• List of industry organizations you have a membership/affiliation with (e.g., MROC, CFM).
• List of music- and/or business-specific grant funding you have received to date (indicate the granting organization and year received).
• Short summary of your career-related goals for the end of the summer, one year from now, and five years from now.

Candidates must also answer the following questions:

• Are you currently a member of a musician-specific union (e.g., Toronto Musicians’ Association)
• Does your released music have assigned ISRC codes
• Do you keep track of your metadata If so, how
• Have you formally registered as a business

If you have any additional documentation (i.e., strategic plans, release/promotional materials) that you would like to submit as supplementary information, please do so in the box labelled “Additional Documentation.” Please utilize a Google Drive, Dropbox or equivalent software to share these files, and ensure that the audition jurors will be able to open the files.Note: if you are a member of a band or ensemble, materials for that band or ensemble are sufficient, as long as you have heavily participated in the creation of those materials. Bands or ensemble members must apply and audition individually.*** RETURNING STAFF ***Emerging Artists employed in this role in any prior seasons are required to add a resume and cover letter detailing their growth since their last season, why they would like to return, and what they hope to get out of the program if selected for 2022. Please keep in mind that you will not necessarily return to the same position that you held last year.AUDITION INFORMATIONYou must submit a link (in the pre-screening questions) to a YouTube video (2-3 minutes) of yourself performing one or more songs that you feel best represent your musical ability.

• Original material is preferred.
• Video must be unedited (i.e., no vocal tuning, audio processing, or video editing of any kind).
• Links to public performances are permitted as long as they follow these guidelines.
• We will review a maximum of three minutes of content. You can provide a link that starts at a specified timestamp of your choice.
• Video may be uploaded as “unlisted” on YouTube if preferred. Please ensure that your video link is NOT private, as the audition jurors will not be able to view it and your application will not be considered.

Next Steps:After the initial application (including the video performance submission), applicants successful at that stage will be invited to participate in a live, but online, ‘Callbacks’ second-round process. Please make sure you are available on the following dates:

• March 31st or April 2nd or April 3rd
• April 28th or April 29th or April 30th

Callbacks will consist of a second-round audition, media interview, and a formal panel job interview. All this will take place over Zoom, and each level of assessment will be recorded.The Co-op also offers the Pre-Professional Program, which is an employment program like the EA program, catered more to artists at the beginning of their career.The Pre-Professional Program is a full-time, paid opportunity for early-career musicians to level up their artist business in preparation for the Emerging Artist Program and a career in music. We have roles for singer-songwriters, self-accompanied vocalists, and instrumentalists (including backline performers on bass, drums, keys, guitar, and horns).Over the course of two months in the summer, Pre-Professional Program Artists participate in workshops and a variety of skill-building opportunities to improve their understanding of the music industry. They split their time between performance (online or in-person) and training that builds a foundational understanding of the Canadian Music Industry at large.If you would like to be considered for both the Emerging Artist and Pre-Professional Program, please only submit the EA application, and indicate that you would like to be considered for both in the pre-screening questionnaire.IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:To have your application considered by the Jury, all pre-interview questions must be filled out completely.Please note that there are no part-time or performance-only positions this year.Membership is not required to participate in the competition for this position, and no preference is given to existing members in our ranking process, however, upon acceptance of an employment contract, all employees are required to join the co-operative.Those not selected for the Summer Emerging Artist Program or the Pre-Professional Program (PPP) are still welcome to join the Co-op as members.
