Apply by September 20, 2023, and tell us what excites you about this role. We are currently looking for an Environmental Scientist to join our Environment Services team in a permanent position. Reporting to the Manage – Environmental (Hydroamp; Wind), you will be accountable for the provision of the Environmental Management System (EMS) and environmental science expertise with a focus on Power Generation (Hydro) across Nova Scotia Power, including but not limited to supporting Hydro and Wind Operations teams in maintaining environmental compliance and executing operational environmental studies and projects. As an Environmental Scientist: Responsibilities, as they pertain to environmental support for hydro operations include, but are not limited to:Supporting environmental studies and regulatory approvals, including liaising with consultants and regulators and collaborating with internal NSPI groups and Environmental Services staff Supporting engagement and consultation with the Mi’kmaq of NS Providing environmental expertise, guidance and support to NSPI, including participating in regular meetings and updates, reviewing engineering designs and consultant reports, understanding current environmental guidelines and regulatory considerations, and advising on potential environmental impacts and mitigation. Supporting project activities, including the development and implementation of plans to mitigate, minimize and monitor environmental effects, providing field expertise, site supervision and auditing of contractor services, regulatory engagement and reporting Supporting environmental monitoring, studies, and compliance programs Preparing and presenting environmental information for employee and/or contractor orientations and training Data collection, analysis and preparation of reports for regulatory departments/agencies in support of regulatory approvals, compliance monitoring and environmental monitoring. Organize, track and communicate environmental regulatory requirements, timelines and associated budgets.What skills will make you successful You recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and where possible possess the skills and experience listed below:You will have completed an Environmental Technologist, Bachelor of Science degree (preferably in Biology/Ecology) or a Bachelor of Engineering degree. You will have a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience. Experience in some of the following areas is preferred: Hydro and Flows, Indigenous Engagement, Environmental legislation at Provincial and Federal levels and report/data analysis and interpretation. Experience in some of the following areas is considered an asset: wetland identification, watercourse alteration, fish and fish habitat, species at risk, use of mapping tools (e.g. GPS/GIS), construction monitoring, ISO 14001 environmental management systems and database management. You possess a high level of professionalism, a strong work ethic, and demonstrated communication, problem solving, and analytical skills. You are a self-motivated team player with the ability to manage multiple tasks and make independent decisions in a timely manner. The successful candidate will have the ability to report clearly on outcomes to all members of NSPI/Emera.
