ESTIMATORLocated at 3099 Barrington Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, B3K 5M7, and 35 Micmac Boulevard, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, B3A 4Y8, Irving Shipbuilding has a proud history as Canadas shipbuilder. A proud member of the J.D. Irving, Limited group of companies, we have been building quality vessels and fabricated modules for more than 50 years, and our Halifax Shipyard has been at the forefront of Canadian shipbuilding for 130 years.Since 2012, we have invested more than $400 million in facilities, people, processes, and technology, making Halifax Shipyard one of the most modern and capable shipyards in North America. Over the next 30 years our shipbuilders will construct 20+ modern patrol ships and surface combatants for the Royal Canadian Navy as part of Canadas National Shipbuilding Strategy, the largest defence procurement in Canadian history. This year we delivered the second lead Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship, the largest Navy ship built in Canada in 50 years and were just getting started. The third ship will be delivered in 2022.Were growing our team with career-defining opportunities that will revitalize Canadas shipbuilding industry and provide Canadas sailors with the ships they need to protect Canadas interests at home and abroad. Our workforce of over 2,000 will grow to more than 2,800 at peak construction of the Canadian Surface Combatants. We have built more than 80% of Canadas current combatant fleet and continue to perform maintenance and modernization work on the ships, including the Halifax-class frigates.Irving Shipbuilding Inc. is seeking an Estimator.This is a permanent full-time role based in Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia. The primary language of work is English.   • Education Required: Post-secondary degree/diploma, in engineering or engineering technology required, or Journeyperson status in any shipbuilding-related trade
  • Membership in a professional organization (APENS, TechNova) or Interprovincial Certification (Red Seal) considered an asset, but not a requirement
  • Years of Experience Required: 5-10 years of experience in various roles including Project Management, Subcontractor Management, Supervision of skilled Trades, skilled Trades, etc. working in an engineering/manufacturing/shipbuilding or other similar environment required
  • Experience in the shipbuilding/naval sectors, major construction contracts or Defense contracts considered an asset
  • Knowledge of document control and configuration management in a Defense environment considered a strong advantage
  • Highly proactive with the ability to work in a fast-paced and diverse environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office 2010+ (i.e., Teams, Excel, Word and Power Point)
  • Exceptional time management, problem solving and relationship building skills
All successful applicants must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).Responsibilities:
  • Using Client provided specifications and drawings to create detailed work scopes and work packages
  • Estimate the required person-hours for Woodside Industries / Shelburne Ship Repair / Halifax Shipyard to carry out the work
  • Create and manage subcontractor Request for Quotes or provide technical assistance to Supply Chain Group during their creation of subcontractor Request for Quotes
  • Review subcontractor proposals and pricing to choose the subcontractor best suited for the work
  • Maintain and update detailed lists of all subcontractor proposals for a project
  • Create and manage material-vendor Request for Quotes or provide technical assistance to Supply Chain Group during their creation of material Request for Quotes
  • Review vendor proposals and pricing to choose the vendor best suited for the work
  • Maintain and update detailed lists of all material related vendor proposals for a project
  • Utilize work scopes and work packages to create detailed execution Method Statements for the Client provided specificiations
  • Assist the Estimating Coordinator with the overall bid package that will be submitted to the Client
  • Assist other Estimators with multi-disciplinary specification items where necessary
  • Compile and catalog Estimating Projects using Microsoft SharePoint
  • Create Estimating Worksheets using Microsoft Excel
  • View and analyze Client Drawings using Adobe Professional or AutoCAD
  • Create Material and Subcontractor RFQ’s using Microsoft Word or Adobe Professional
Estimates can include:
  • Large Commercial Vessels - tankers, container ships, bulkers, cargo vessels
  • Coast Guard Vessels - ice breakers, buoy tenders, research vessels, coastal patrol vessels
  • RCN Warships - frigate life extension projects, frigate docking work periods, MCDV docking work periods
  • RCN Auxiliary Vessels - harbour tugs, diving tenders, water and fueling barges
  • Commercial Auxiliary Vessels - harbour tugs, dredge barges, barge/tug combinations
  • Commercial Fishing Vessels - trawlers, draggers
  • Oilfield Service Vessels - anchor handlers, supply vessels
  • Semi-Submersible Oil Rigs - refits and Out of Service projects for 2nd to 6th generation semi-submersibles
  • Industrial Components - prefabricated pipe racks, steel formwork
