Job Description

About the Dalhousie Student Union (DSU): The DSU represents the collective voice of over 18,000 students in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The DSU advocates for student rights, builds community on campus through events, supports over 300 societies, and provides focused services to foster a supportive and positive student experience.Position Summary:The Dalhousie Student Union Farmers’ Market is committed to making fresh, local, and whenever possible spray-free produce available to students at an affordable price. More information about the DSU Farmers’ Market can be found here.We are looking for dedicated Dalhousie students who are interested in improving food security on campus by assisting us in cultivating a Farmers’ Market on Dalhousie’s Studley Campus.Reports to DSU Market Operations Manager.Wage: $15.00 per hour, approximately 15 hours a weekResponsibilities:

  • Create Price List and Update Square
  • Update Ordering Spreadsheet based on current supplier pricing
  • Recruit additional volunteers
  • Send out Volunteer and Staff Schedule and communicate with both in case of unable to volunteer/work shift and find people to cover shifts, if unable to find someone to cover operations manager covers the stand
  • Biweekly or weekly meeting if necessary, with the team
  • Complete weekly payroll summary of all of the Market staff
  • Communicate with the Accounting office about invoices
  • Determine if supplies are required for regular operation and purchase
  • Coordinate with the Sexton market for smooth operation
  • Invoice Loaded Ladle and communicate with them (and other organizations such as Found and Forgotten Food) regarding excess produce.
  • Order produce from Abundant Acres, Noggins and other farms
  • Order additional products from external vendors
Other Responsibilities:
  • Work with Office of Sustainability to satisfy appropriate requirements for funding (vendor research, order tracking)
  • Research external funding opportunities to reduce staffing costs of the DSU Market
  • Maintain strong relationship with farmers and vendors
  • Create and foster new relationships between the DSU Market and Nova Scotian Farmers, Artisans, and Bakers to increase variety of what is sold at the market
  • Manage budgets & spending with the support of DSU Accounting
  • Produce summary of accounts / reports for budget updates
  • Coordinate with the DSU Accounting department regarding Payment Processors
  • Complete invoicing for clients
  • Coordinate the handling of cash with the Market Coordinators and the DSU Accounting Department.
  • Assisting with additional staff and volunteer training
  • Scan market for possible improvements for efficiency and cost savings and implement methods to do so
  • Determine methods to increase volunteer and stand/Food Box customer retention.
  • Attend meetings as necessary
  • Ensure that the farmers market has a fun and respectful work environment
