We welcome all interested persons who self-identify as Indigenous, Black/African Nova Scotians, Persons of Colour, Immigrants/Newcomers, Persons with Disabilities, 2SLGBTQIA+ to apply to support our goal for our workforce to be representative of the patients, families, and communities that we care for at all job levels.The OpportunityUnder the direction of the Manager, Protection and Business Continuity Services, the Fire Safety Coordinator provides consultation, subject matter expert support and advice to all staff and management in developing and administering comprehensive fire safety program and fire safety awareness within IWK Health and all offsite locations. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: ensuring fire suppression, detection, and notification systems are in working condition and compliant with Code(s).The Fire Safety Coordinator is responsible for:

  • Inspects existing buildings and occupancies for compliance with Provincial and National Fire Codes in addition to applicable building codes.
  • Identify and assess fire hazards and recommend and monitor controls for those hazards to ensure the Health Centre is in compliance with policies/procedures and legislative requirements.
  • In collaboration with Emergency Preparedness, maintain policies, procedures, checklists and signage, with regards to Fire Safety at the IWK Main Site, the Helideck, and off-site locations.
  • Responds to and analyse the causes of fire alarms, follows up and provide solutions. Validates changes are acceptable with the stakeholders.
  • Develop, provides training and assist with workplace inspections, incident investigations and audits related to fire safety incidents.
  • In collaboration with facility engineers, maintain maintenance and testing of fire safety systems and equipment at the Health Centre and offsite locations including fire suppression, detection, and notification systems to ensure that systems are in working condition and compliant with Code(s).
  • In collaboration with the Procurement Department, manage and maintain service contracts for fire safety systems and equipment.
  • Maintains thorough and accurate records of all activities.
  • Oversees the monitoring & maintenance of fire suppression, detection, and notification systems.
  • In collaboration with the Helideck manager, maintains and tests the helideck fire systems.
  • Review plans and project specifications for renovation, upgrade, and construction projects, in collaboration with facilities team.
  • Ensure up to date drawings for use within the Fire Safety Department and throughout the Health Centre using CAD Software.
  • Collaborate with other IWK Health divisions with employee orientation on Fire Safety
  • Supporting the Leadership of the broader Protection and Business Continuity Services Team.
  • Contributing to the leadership team of the Protection & Business Continuity Services division.
  • Other duties as assigned.
The Fire Safety Coordinator provides situational and operational leadership preparing for and during security / emergency / disaster related situations liaising with all levels of IWK leadership internally and various levels of federal, provincial, and municipal governments externally (Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency, Nova Scotia Office of the Fire Marshall, Transport Canada etc.).Hours of Work75 hours by weekly. On call coverage may be required.Your Qualifications
  • Diploma in a related field (Fire Protection Engineering Technician, Fire Safety Systems, Fire Inspection and Fire safety Education) required or an equivalent combination of extensive fire safety related experience and education/training may be considered for this position. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Post-secondary education in Fire Protection/Safety is an asset
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in fire safety required, preferably in a healthcare related environment
  • Current successful completion of a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Basic Life Support Level (BLS) Program within the last 12 months, or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate required
  • Emergency Management and/or fire service credentials are an asset.
  • Working knowledge of and experience with air ambulance, helideck operations, and Transport Canada standards is an asset.
  • Working knowledge with:
  • National Fire Code and NFPA Standards.
  • National / local building codes.
  • Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • Knowledge of health care / patient care and IWK specific operations considered an asset.
  • Proficiency with computers and technology, such as Microsoft Office Suite; SAP; fire detection, notification, and suppression systems; radio communications systems; elevator control systems; ID & access control systems; etc.
  • Ability to handle emergencies and deescalate situations.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer focused and collaborative approaches.
  • Dedication to continuous learning and improvement.
  • Demonstrated written, verbal and presentation/communication skills.
  • Strong process/procedure development and implementation skills.
  • Competency in other languages considered an asset
