Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the permanent position of Garage Helper for Municipal Fleet. HRM encourages applicants to self-identify.Under the direction of the Supervisor of Municipal Fleet, the Garage Helper is responsible for performing the necessary duties to support all shop activities, ensuring vehicles and equipment are ready for service. Duties include but are not limited to pick-up & delivery of vehicles/ equipment, pick-up parts, cleaning, fueling, top up of fluids and performing special cleaning as necessary, as well as minor mechanical repairs. Associated paperwork and data entry is required. This position is responsible to perform their work following all relevant safety procedures. The individual must possess mechanical knowledge and aptitude as well as a Class 3 Driver's License, with an acceptable Driver's Abstract.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Shop Cleaning, Maintenance, etc.Ensure Shop areas are clean, garbage emptied and shop tools are in assigned areas, when not in use.Clean computer cabinets, eyewash stations, etc.Cleaning and minor adjustments/repairs to shop tools, such as tire machine, grinders, pressure washer, etc.Monitor vehicle status, in the fleet yard, in accordance to the status sheetDrivingOperate vehicles as needed; delivery and pick up to and from vendor/clientsParts pick up/delivery, internally or externally, as required.Aware of possible oversize vehicles and operation of same, in close quartersAbility to hook up and move TrailersWash/CleaningUse of pressure washer/steam cleaner to clean exterior of vehiclesLight interior vehicle cleaningMinor Maintenance and mechanical repairs to the fleet, i.e.: replacing bulbs, wiper blades, mirrors, cutting edges, and grease and oil changes.Other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience:Grade 12 or equivalentTwo (2) years experience in servicing of fleet vehicles, checking oils, fluids, coolants, fuelling, cleaning and general operation.Experience with minor repairs such as changing wiper blades, tires and headlightsMust use basic hand toolsAcceptable driver's abstractClass 3 Driver's license with air brake endorsementDemonstrated experience in the use of computer applications such as, Microsoft programs, fleet maintenance software (i.e.: fleet focus), etc..Must be punctual and reliableProven ability to work as a teamCurrent Forklift operator certificate and WHMIS training an assetTechnical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:Follow safe work practicesRead and interpret policies, procedural manuals, MSDS sheets, operation and service manuals and other work related documents.Follow written and oral instructionsUtilize computer equipment to input work order information and complete other basic computer functionsManage time, priorities and work in pressure situation with multiple deadlinesPhysical Demands:None - Not at All; Occasional - 1 to 2.5hrs; Frequent - 2.6 to 5.5hrsStanding - FrequentWalking - FrequentBending - Occasional to FrequentSquatting - OccasionalLifting - Occasional to Frequent (Up to 25 lbs., with assistance)Pushing/Pulling - Occasional to Frequent (Up to 50 lbs., with assistance)Carrying - Occasional (Up to 25lbs., with assistance)Environmental Demands:Indoor garage environment, exhaust fumes, dust and soot, high noise levelsHours of work 8am to 4pm M/FMust be available for overtime when requiredDuties may be performed outside in all weather conditionsPsychological Demands:Intense visual concentration required when working on computerTendency to have high volume of interruptionsWorking Conditions:This position is subject to Schedule “C-1” of the collective agreement between Halifax Regional Municipality and Halifax Civic Workers’ Union/CUPE Local 108. As such, during snow and ice control operations the position may be assigned to alternate work locations as needed.
