Job Description

In aerospace, transportation, defence, security and space, our architects design innovative solutions that make our tomorrow's possible.The HSE Specialist is responsible for Occupational Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) activities associated with the Royal Canadian Navy AOPV and JSS class vessels managed by Thales under the AJISS contract. The role supports the AJISS Service Delivery team with the delivery of vessel maintenance activities at the waterfront. The role will lead the development and implementation of the AJISS Program HSE strategy, management systems and plans. In addition, it will provide advice, leadership and hands-on support to project personnel and assist in the promotion and education of HSE principles.Key AccountabilitiesComplete activities to support the implementation and maintenance of the Group, Division and site HSE strategy, management system and improvement plans.Work proactively with project personnel, subcontractors, customers and the regulator in order to collaboratively address work place HSE risks.Support waterfront personnel to achieve the Group, division and site HSE strategy, management system and improvement plans, considering specific requirements for the site.Develop and implement and lead a Site Safety Audit program and a HSE Leading Indicator programWork with subcontractors to address any specific HSE requirements and risks and ensure they are assessed and appropriate controls are developed, implemented and maintained. This includes considering the varied requirements to consult with, engage and motivate personnel at the worksite.Coordinate and complete hazard, incident and injury/illness reports, inspections and investigations. Monitor to ensure that corrective actions are communicated and completed.Support Project related activities including HSE inspections, subcontractor audits, reporting and meetings as required.Assist project staff in the day-to-day implementation of their HSE responsibilities and provide verbal and written reports as requiredBe a visible presence and support projects/departments with HSE program implementation to meet organisational needs.Present, maintain and coordinate induction, training, information and instructions for HSE.Assist with emergency preparedness and planning for the work site.Ensure that systems for maintaining and displaying information and records relating to HSE are maintained in alignment with Group, division and site HSE tools provided.Act as a role model to all personnel by demonstrating full support of Thales Canada’s occupational health, safety and environmental programs.Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of relevant legal, regulatory and company safety and environmental requirements. Complete a Legal and Other Requirements Review, and ensure AJISS program HSE arrangements are appropriately aligned with the Federal worksite - Royal Canadian Navy client, and Provincial legislation.Support achievement of certification to ISO standards 14001 and 45001.Participate in the Joint Health and Safety Committee and actively identify and implement opportunities to improve HSE.Key RequirementsHold, or in the process of obtaining certification to Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP ®) and/or Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) certification.3 to 5 years of experience in a professional HSE role in a marine or industrial production settingExperience in implementing a HSE program as a Prime Contractor / ConstructorExperience implementing a Site Safety Audit program and/or Leading Indicators in a HSE programComprehensive knowledge of Federal and Provincial (Nova Scotia) Environmental and Occupational Health Regulations.This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Export Control List, Canadian Controlled Goods Program, the Canadian Industrial Security Program, the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be able to meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the Canadian Controlled Goods Program and able to obtain a Canadian NATO Secret clearance.Formal degree/diploma or equivalent in Health and Safety Environment preferred.Previous experience in a defence related contract is desirable.Experience in achievement of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification is desirableThales is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace for all.
