We value the collective diversity of our heritage and our people and believe in the transformative nature of culture to help create healthy, active, growing communities.About Our OpportunityThe Janitor at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic maintains the museum in a clean and safe condition by cleaning floors, stairways, doors, windows, and various surfaces, garbage removal, sanitizing, and tidying throughout the building and exterior areas of the museum. They clean washrooms, meeting rooms, kitchenettes, lunchrooms, public galleries, lobbies, and other areas, as required. They occasionally support cleaning requirements on board the museum ship, CSS Acadia. As they work in and around the museum’s public areas, the museum Janitor must provide friendly customer service, and be able to perform their duties professionally in the presence of museum visitors and other staff.This position reports to the Manager of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.Primary Accountabilities

  • Maintains the museum, which is a public institution, in a clean and safe condition.
  • Work with other maintenance, technical, and visitor service staff to ensure a safe, clean and welcoming museum and work environment.
Qualifications and ExperienceTo be success in this role you must have the ability to read and understand WHMIS labels. You have knowledge and experience with appropriate cleaning techniques for a variety of building requirements. You have strong interpersonal and time-management skills, you can be self-directed, able to work independently but also demonstrate teamwork valuing and respecting a diverse and inclusive environment.Assets:
  • Experience and/or training in one or more building trade.
  • Experience and/or training with customer service and working with the public.
  • Sensitivity for the special requirements for working in a museum environment, including working with museum objects and the public.

  • The position requires considerable strenuous labour, including lifting and hauling, sweeping, mopping, climbing stairs etc. Some of the work occurs outdoors, around the museum’s exterior and aboard the museum ship. Various cleaning products and cleaning equipment are used daily.
  • There are mental pressures and stress related to the responsibility of maintaining a large and busy building.
  • Some weekend and afterhours may be required.
Additional InformationThis is a full-time, temporary status position with an end date of May 3, 2023, however the position status (“term”, “temporary” or “casual”) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.What We Offer
