Current projects include studies of phytoplankton cultures’ potential for remediation of organic wastes from various food technologies, and studies of the potential impact of ocean alkalization enhancement. The work is conducted with partners in academia, government, and the private sector and includes a significant component of student training.The Ocean Frontier Institute (OFI; ) is a major global hub for ocean research headquartered at Dalhousie University with partners at ocean research centers around the North Atlantic Ocean. OFI has established the Research Implementation Unit (RIU): a team of specialized technical staff who assist OFI researchers at Dalhousie with field research, data management and analysis, and interaction with key technical personnel from OFI partners.Job SummaryReporting to the MacIntyre Lab Manager, the Lab and Field Technician is a key member of both the MacIntyre Lab and OFI Bedford Basin time series (BBTS) team and will be involved in day-to-day field and laboratory activities, including participating in the collection of data and water samples, and processing of the water samples upon return to Dalhousie. An example of a time series is a collaboration with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) in which samples are collected from the Bedford Basin every week.Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare for weekly measurements, including calibrating instruments, preparing solutions, and gathering and inspecting field gear.
  • Participate in weekly field sampling aboard small vessels, including staging equipment at Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth and loading and unloading the vessel.
  • Deploy and recover in-water electronics.
  • Collect water samples using Niskin bottles.
  • Process water samples for chlorophyll and particulate concentration, particulate and CDOM absorption of light, dissolved oxygen concentration, and perform other analyses, as required.
NoteDue to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.QualificationsUndergraduate degree in natural sciences, preferably Oceanography, Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, or other related field is required. Related experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and operating laboratory and oceanographic equipment is an asset. Experience processing data is preferred. Strong attention to detail is required to ensure that measurements over time are intercomparable. Must be able to lift 20kg and possess a valid driver’s license to drive a Dalhousie University vehicle. Must be able to pass a physical examination required for MED A3 training, and be able to work at sea. Strong adherence to safety protocols and the ability to ensure checklists are followed is required.
