The Legal Services Division provides legal advice and services on a broad range of matters to the Government and many of its agencies, boards, and commissions. The Legal Services Division consists of Solicitor Services, Litigation Services and the Registry of Regulations.For more information on the Department of Justice Legal Services please visit our website: https://novascotia.ca/just/legal_services/About Our OpportunityWe are recruiting a Paralegal to support Solicitor Services. As a Paralegal you will provide lawyers with a variety of case and file management services. In this role, you can expect to collect, prepare, organize and process legal documentation while assisting lawyers with property closings on behalf of the Crown. You will assume responsibility for tasks ranging from drafting correspondence to carrying out comprehensive research. You will also maintain legal databases regarding property transactions, as well as searching and retrieving documents and information. Ensuring accuracy and integrity of paper and electronic data is part of this role, including working and complying with policies, legislation, regulations and procedures.Primary AccountabilitiesAs the successful candidate, you will be responsible to:

  • Prepare and process legal documentation and correspondence;
  • Act as a point of contact to ensure clients have the appropriate information including file updates, process or procedural changes, Division updates and other general matters;
  • Respond to inquiries from the public, including external law firms, to ensure appropriate and relevant information is provided;
  • Complete various corporate, commercial and real estate transactions through maintaining knowledge of products, processes, and procedures;
  • Review agreements and contracts for necessary changes and complete necessary searches using online specialized databases;
  • Carry out comprehensive legal research to identify specific legal issues;
  • Maintain databases and due diligences searches.
  • Ensure accuracy and integrity of paper and electronic data is part of this role, including working and compliance with policies, legislation, regulations and procedures; and
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and ExperienceAs our successful candidate, you will have completed High School and a two (2) year paralegal technology course from a recognized institution and have 6 years of progressively responsible experience as a property paralegal supporting a lawyer in their real property practice, or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable practice.Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.You may have the following assets:
  • knowledge and understanding of Property Online and Nova Scotia land registration systems;
  • experience in preparing and reviewing Report and Recommendations, Requests for Legislation, as well as corporate and commercial related documents.
You will have a high level of initiative, judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines.
