Job Description

Halifax Public Libraries invites INTERNAL and EXTERNAL applications for the part-time, permanent position of Library Assistant 5 (Home Delivery) in the Home Delivery Department, located at Halifax North Public Library.Halifax Public Libraries is an inclusive employer committed to employment equity and building a diverse workforce. If you require an accommodation, we will confidentially address your needs.A RESOURCE FOR ALLHome Delivery coordinates the delivery of library materials to HRM residents who are unable to visit one of Halifax Public Libraries branches due to disability, long-term illness, or caregiver responsibilities. We select materials based on borrower preferences, pack, unpack, check-in and check-out materials, and coordinate the delivery of materials directly to borrowers homes.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESUnder the direction of the Home Delivery Service Supervisor, this position provides to the Homebound Clients. The following duties and responsibilities are normal for this position:

  • Registers clients for home delivery service and prepares information packets and
  • library cards
  • Develops, inputs, maintains, and updates reading interest profiles
  • Provides information and readers’ advisory services, using print and electronic sources, in response to client needs
  • Selects materials in alignment with reading interest profiles or in response to specific requests from clients
  • Explains library policies and addresses minor complaints
  • Alerts clients to overdue or lost materials
  • Checks out and renews materials and places holds as requested
  • Assists with supervision of volunteer selectors
  • Keeps things running smoothly by determining workflow priorities for the immediate shift and make recommendations for future shifts.
  • Accepts payments, waive fines and issue refunds
  • Assists in training of staff and provide practical instruction and support
  • Pack/unpack library materials, search shelves and retrieve items

Do You Have What It TakesEducation & ExperienceBachelors degree plus six (6) months related library experienceORTwo (2) - Year Library & Information Technology Diploma plus two (2) years related library experienceORGrade Twelve (12) plus three (3) years related experienceRequirements:
  • Knowledge of Internet, Windows and office software applications
  • Numerical and alphabetical skills
Assets:
  • Supervisory experience
  • Familiarity with Dewey Decimal system
  • Familiarity with an automated library system
  • Experience working with diverse communities including economically, culturally and socially diverse individuals
  • Experience working with seniors and/or persons with disabilities
