Employment Opportunity: Library Assistant, Access ServicesEstablished in 1789, Kings College is Canadas oldest chartered university and is associated with Dalhousie University. A small and extraordinarily lively academic community located in Halifax (Kjipuktuk), Nova Scotia, Kings is known nationally and internationally for its highly acclaimed interdisciplinary programs in the humanities, including its renowned Foundation Year Program, its professional programs in journalism and its fine arts program in creative writing. Kings is a community where students, faculty, alumni, and staff work to bring greater understanding, creativity, and compassion to the world.The University of Kings College Library contains more than 85,000 volumes and supports teaching in the Contemporary Studies Program, Early Modern Studies Program, History of Science and Technology Program, Foundation Year Program, School of Journalism, and Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction program. Library staff provide research guidance, and the library offers comfortable spaces to study, with a variety of seating options for individuals and groups in a wireless environment. Computers, scanning, and printing facilities are available.Reporting to the University Librarian, the Library Assistant, Access Services is responsible for overseeing those functions in a library which enables the use of the collections, including the general circulation functions, holds, course reserves, interlibrary loans, shelving and reshelving of materials, and stack maintenance. They are responsible for hiring, training, and supervising approximately twelve student assistants. This includes posting job advertisements, conducting interviews, scheduling shifts and monitor shift changes, tracking and submitting payroll information for processing among other related duties.The Library Assistant is also responsible for providing services to patrons on circulation desk shifts, and in-person research assistance to patrons using Novanet, databases, and print resources. They will also provide reference services through Live Help and liaise with other Access Services supervisors in the Novanet consortium. The successful candidate will troubleshoot printing and wi-fi tech issues, assist with Interlibrary Loans/Document Delivery (incoming and outgoing) as required using Relais, WorldCat, and other standard tools, special projects, and other assigned duties. This is a full-time permanent position.The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree and a diploma in Library and Information Technology plus 2 years experience or equivalent training and experience. They must possess experience with MS Office suite and other relevant software. Experience with ILS and discovery services, preferably ALMA, Primo, and LibGuides is required. Experience with Relais and Worldcat, training and supervising a team are assets.Closing Date: August 12, 2022. The salary for this position is under review.
