Housing Nova Scotia (HNS) is working to advance the objectives of the National Housing Strategy and has developed a 3-year Action Plan. HNS is the provincial government agency responsible for the administration and delivery of affordable housing solutions for low-to modest income Nova Scotians. Through its five regional Housing Authorities, HNS provides more than 11,500 safe, affordable homes as part of its Public Housing program to more than 17,000 seniors and families. Housing Authorities manage the day-to-day operations of Nova Scotia’s public housing stock.About Our OpportunityUnder the general supervision of the Operations Manager, the Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that their assigned units of Metropolitan Regional Housing Authority (MRHA) are maintained in a good state of repair. Furthermore, the incumbent must provide supervision to their work unit through planning daily work schedules; coaching when appropriate; conducting performance reviews and administering discipline, when appropriate.Primary Accountabilities

  • Under the direction of the Building Services Operations Manager, the Maintenance Supervisor executes effective delivery of building programs and projects by meeting KeyPerformance Indicators that measure progress and success; monitoring and controlling outcomes; measuring, financial forecasting, and communicating status; supervising and holding employees and service contractors accountable; acquiring goods and services; administering contracts and inspecting deliverables for compliance.
  • Supervise staff including selection, training, Safety compliance assigning work, conducting performance reviews, and administering discipline. Promote training and skill development among staff.
  • Incumbent will also participate in after hours and other on-duty manager responsibilities.
  • Perform and document monthly building inspections in accordance with established guidelines, property life safety systems inspections and compliance.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable building codes, legislation, and regulations. Determine the appropriate course of action to ensure repairs are undertaken and to ensure the buildings are maintained in a safe and habitable condition.
  • Provide input into the capital and operating budgets through the identification of needs and required work.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Certificate of qualification under the Apprenticeship and Tradesman’s Qualifications Act of the Province of Nova Scotia or interprovincial certification (Red Seal Journeyperson certification) with at least three years’ supervising diverse employee groups, including non- unionized and unionized staff.
  • Experience in inspection of single and multi-unit residential construction, as well as a thorough knowledge of, and competency in, the interpretation and application of various building regulations and codes is required.
  • Good knowledge of building construction and maintenance repairs with specific knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, and electrical systems.
  • Excellent knowledge of planned maintenance procedures as well as an awareness of building codes, municipal by laws, Provincial Acts and Regulations such as Workers’ Compensation Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and appropriate fire/life safety regulations and the Collective Agreement.
  • Possess current Emergency First Aid and WHMIS certifications.

  • Working knowledge Yardi Property Management software.
