Our 6,000 faculty and staff foster a vibrant, purpose-driven community, that celebrated 200 years of academic excellence in 2018.Job SummaryServing Maritime Canada, the Faculty of Medicine enables excellence in health care through education and research programs in partnership with government, health authorities and health care providers. The Office of Community Partnerships and Global Health takes a collaborative approach to build leadership within the Dalhousie community to advance diversity, equity, community engagement, global health education and international partnerships. Reporting to the Director, and collaborating with the Academic Director (Indigenous Health), the Manager will assist the Faculty of Medicine in responding to the recommendations in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Report and Calls to Action. The Manager will play a vital role in ensuring that the necessary support structures are in place, participating in recruitment and admissions strategies, and liaising with the Indigenous communities as well as with multiple levels of the Faculty of Medicine.Key Responsibilities

  • Consult with the Maritime Indigenous community to build relationships to increase recruitment and retention of Indigenous physicians. This includes Indigenous resources within the University as well as external organizations such as the Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey Education Council, Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre, Maliseet communities, Regional Coordinators for Centres of Education in Nova Scotia.
  • Develop targeted culturally and academically appropriate support systems, including mentorship programs, based on consultations with the Maritime Indigenous communities and Indigenous students.
  • Provide assistance to prospective medical students and information to appropriate services and resources. Field inquiries from prospective students and families.
  • Develop support structures for Indigenous students and residents in medicine. Maintain communication with enrolled students on relevant information including academic enrichment opportunities, scholarship/bursary information.
  • Prepare an annual work plan with a budget, prepare financial summaries and report on performance against budget. Prepare an annual report including evaluation metrics, statistics and opportunities for growth.
  • Collaborate with the Academic Director, Indigenous Health in building and strengthening the program
NoteThe successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.QualificationsUndergraduate degree in Health Promotion, Education, or Business, with five years of experience in a related field, including program design and/or evaluation (or equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. A Master’s degree would be preferred. Existing relationships and demonstrated ability to work in and with Maritime Indigenous communities is required, as well as a demonstrated ability to leverage those relationships in a professional context. Knowledge of the Indigenous experience in education and health systems is a requirement of this role. Experience advising students, including ability to support different types of needs. Knowledge of medical education programs and/or academic health care environment will be considered an asset. Excellent communication skills (verbal & written) and interpersonal skills are required as well as excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management skills.
