OFI’s Research Implementation Unit (RIU) is a team of highly skilled and specialized technical staff who assist OFI researchers at Dalhousie with field research, data management and analysis, and interaction with key technical personnel from OFI partners.The RIU supports ocean observation in Atlantic Canada and uses emerging technology to observe, understand and predict physical, biogeochemical and ecological change in the ocean. OFI has a strong partnership with the Ocean Tracking Network (), also hosted at Dalhousie University. OFI cooperates with multiple partners in Atlantic Canada, including the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, University of Prince Edward Island, and Memorial University of Newfoundland.Job SummaryReporting to the Field Team Lead, the RIU Mechanical/Electrical Technician will be an integral part of field operations by maintaining field gear, participating in expeditions and independently preparing equipment for deployment.Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to the RIU.
  • Maintain calibration and service records on oceanographic equipment.
  • Assemble oceanographic equipment in the shop and on commercial/research vessels and perform pre-deployment reality checks on oceanographic equipment.
  • Assist or lead, as required, deployments and recoveries of oceanographic equipment.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot oceanographic equipment; interface with equipment vendors on repairs of existing equipment and procurement of new equipment.
  • Assist in preparation and fabrication of field equipment, including but not limited to underwater cable splices, pressure vessels, and assembly of components.
NoteDue to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.QualificationsUndergraduate degree in electronics technology, electrical engineering or mechanical engineering with a minimum of 3 years related experience maintaining, troubleshooting, deploying and recovering oceanographic equipment is required. Experience with the assembly of system components, experience with electrical and mechanical design & fabrication of oceanographic systems and the ability to process and interpret data sets from instrumentation are preferred. Must be able to work at sea, including being able to pass physical examination required for MED A3 training for Transport Canada certification. Must be able to lift 20 kg. Must be able to work collaboratively as part of a team. Strong attention to detail and verbal and written communication skills to document activities and create new protocols and procedures is required. Must understand and strictly follow safety protocols. Experience with autonomous vehicles, knowledge of local vendors, and sea-going experience are assets.Additional InformationDalhousie University supports a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
