Reporting to the Networks Manager in Engineering Services, the Core Technician is responsible for the design, implementation, and the efficient and secure operation of the university’s network systems.Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in development of Network and System Strategy, Requirements Development, Architecture and Planning Design and Integration.
  • Analyze network activities and patterns to project service need for both Dalhousie and ACORN networks; collaborate with manager to assess and accommodate growth in network usage and capability; maintain risk register for both networks and design action plans to mitigate.
  • Determine and implement test plans, processes and equipment to manage design continuity.
  • Develop plans for network changes and ensure the prescribed process/transition plans are followed with appropriate approval, documentation and aligned with the predetermined plan.
  • Monitor and manage the impact of change; ensure effective scheduling, implementation following prescribed checklists, documentation and effective communication to the Networks Operations team.
  • Assist in selection, configuration, maintenance and operation of Cisco Software Defined Network event monitoring tools, selection and implementation.
NoteThis position occasionally requires overtime.QualificationsBachelors in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field with a minimum of five years’ relevant experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. Master’s of Internetworking or related field preferred. Demonstrated experience in advanced network design, implementation, operation and maintenance of CISCO equipment. ITIL certification preferred. Cisco CNA, CNP or CCNP designation, CCIE designation preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal and organizational skills are essential. Project Management training and experience working in a university or telecommunications organization preferred.Job Competencies Additional InformationDalhousie University supports a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
