Job Description

Open Arms is a community partner that engages with children, youth, and their families in redemptive relationships; guided by a desire to bring hope to our community and rooted in the love and good news of Jesus Christ. The position is focused on developing, coordinating, and executing ministries of Open Arm that support the families of the North End community and build positive community partnerships in the area.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute to the spiritual development of children/youth and their families within the community by mentoring, discipling, encouraging, and modeling appropriate attitudes and behaviours through a Christian worldview
  • Plan and implement programs for children, youth, and their families
  • Monitor needs in the community and develop programming to respond accordingly
  • Coordinate regular outreach efforts into the community (Day Camps, sports, family fun events, messy church, etc.)
  • Work in cooperation and consultation with the Centre of Hope leadership team
  • Demonstrate keen interest in connecting families to The Salvation Army ministries through outreach programs and relationship building
  • Assist in maintaining of program space (i.e., regular toy cleaning, updating, safety, organizing)
  • Work with the leaders of The Centre of Hope ministries to provide pastoral support to children, youth, and their families
  • May provide input into the departmental budget and be required to monitor the financial performance accordingly
  • Interact with community partners as necessary to seek resources and services for youth and families
  • Perform administrative duties associated with position requirements
  • Promote and provide oversight to all current programs and develop and recruit a volunteer base for the ministries of Open Arms
  • Perform other position-related duties as required
  • Assist in advancing the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada as related to position responsibilities
  • Participate as an active and responsible team member of the Centre of Hope
  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner
  • Maintain requirements for abuse prevention for all staff according to Salvation Army policy
  • Must comply with Salvation Army health and safety policies and procedures and associated legislation
  • Participate in supervision and performance appraisal process
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training.
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENTGovernance Boards and Councils: n/aInternal: Centre of Hope management team, Family Services staff teamExternal: Community Partners and councilMANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:
  • Reports directly to: Assistant ED (Centre of Hope)
  • Direct reports: 2 Open Arms Program Assistants
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
  • Regular responsibility for minor financial matters and for wise use of own resources and effective use of budget
  • May be authorized to handle small amounts of cash
  • Moderate responsibility for material resources (toys, equipment)
Working Conditions:
  • Open Arms facility (5424, 5426, 5428 Uniacke street)
  • Occasional Community and Family Services office located at the Centre of Hope (2038 Gottingen Street)
  • Working with at risk and vulnerable populations
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required and will vary according to the needs of the program
  • The hours of work will usually occur Monday to Friday with flexibility – some weekends and evening work may be required
  • Required to carry a cell phone – on call
  • The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to:
    • Physical attacks by others (e.g., violent/aggressive client acting out physically)
    • Exposure to infectious diseases
    • Moving and sharp objects
    • Emergency response situations (fire, bomb threat, etc.)
    • Other potentially dangerous situations
The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct.QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of two academic years in Human Services diploma or other relevant undergraduate degree or
  • Completion of a diploma in Biblical studies or equivalent education is an asset
  • Certification in non-violent crisis intervention, suicide intervention, standard first aid and COH medication training and/or a commitment to secure those requirements within six months of hiring
  • Criminal Record Check, WHMIS
  • Current CPR/First Aid or willing to obtain and maintain current certification
  • An alternative combination of education and experience might be considered
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
  • A minimum of one year of prior related experience coordinating programs for kids, youth, and families
  • Experience working with and providing for at risk children and youth will be considered as a strong asset.
  • Proven experience in program development
  • Ability to use Salvation Army financial management tools
  • Proficiency with social media and adherence to the policy for use
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Driver’s license with clean abstract
  • Vulnerable Sector Registry check
PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:
  • Understand, support and be able to communicate and model the Mission, Values, Doctrines, and policies of The Salvation Army in Canada
  • Ability to lift/move 20 lbs
  • Effective time management
  • Creativity and innovation – ability to develop new, unique ways to improve programs and to create new opportunities
  • Ability to be both an independent contributor and a team player
