Job Description

The Canadian Association of People who Use Drugs (CAPUD) is a national organization that raises the voice of people who use(d) drugs throughout the policy-making process at every level of government. "Nothing About Us Without Us'' is our guiding principle. We strive to reduce oppressive societal conditions that people who currently or formerly use drugs face and emphasize the need for their direct involvement in public policy decision-making. We focus on the strengths, talents, and merits of our membership as we build a better future for people who use drugs. One of CAPUD's main purposes is to empower people who currently use drugs deemed illegal to survive and thrive, with their human rights respected and their voices heard. We envision a world where drugs are regulated and the people who use them are decriminalized. We are survivors of this war and we’ll continue to fight for policy reform that is based in evidence, understanding and compassion.*CAPUD works with various regional and national organizations, institutions and government bodies to ensure people who use drugs are leaders in their communities and stakeholders in drug policy. CAPUD is a multi-faceted organization that leads in the facilitation of best practices when bringing people who use(d) drugs together in a meaningful, inclusive and holistic way. Our work is focused on the importance of inclusion, dialogue and evidence in the creation of drug policies in Canada, to ensure the health, well-being and human rights of all Canadians.The work you will undertake: As Operations Manager, you will support and initiate work towards CAPUD's development and sustainability, and manage the Association's administrative systems. Your responsibilities will focus on a broad range of administrative tasks to ensure the operational and financial sustainability of the Association as well as provide strategic direction on building a fund development strategy. This position reports directly to the Executive Director and works closely with all members of CAPUD's staff team.On a daily basis, you will:

  • Manage the overall organizational budget and assist program staff in budget development and planning to ensure cost-effectiveness, program accountability and strategic direction.
  • Liaise with private and government funders, and coordinate in CAPUD's planning of sustainability and fund development.
  • Manage financial transactions, human resources, record-keeping and budget projections.
  • Oversee the preparation and coordination of funding proposals, grants management and reporting to fulfill all accountability requirements and deadlines detailed by grantors.
  • Liaise with various administrative and program staff to ensure the proper execution of CAPUD’s projects, contracts and financial obligations.
  • Coordinate with program manager on compiling a record of CAPUD's activities for the purposes of grant reporting and communications projects.
  • Ensure effective communication with CAPUD’s Board of Directors (as required by the Executive Director) through administrative coordination, meeting minutes and status updates.
  • Complete in a timely fashion record of decisions taken at CAPUD meetings.
  • Engage Association's members and supporters in CAPUD projects, working groups, communications and fundraising efforts.
  • Contribute creatively to program ideas, team building strategy and knowledge translation efforts.
  • Work collaboratively with diverse partner organizations to broaden and deepen CAPUD's networks across Canada and internationally.
  • Assist with other duties as appropriate.
Who you are:
  • You have 2-5 years of experience in project management with skills including; strategic planning, resource and financial management, grant reporting, risk management and problem-solving.
  • You have completed a Masters or Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
  • You have excellent time management and organization skills.
  • You have strong experience in budget administration.
  • You are a leader, have a talent for problem-solving, tackling complex logistics, and a passion for building networks.
  • You have knowledge of issues and policies surrounding substance use and drug policy issues.
  • You work from a harm reduction lens.
  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including, communities of colour, in the consideration of impacts and outcomes of a decision-making process.
  • An understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities.
  • You have experience organizing dialogues, workshops and/or media events with multiple stakeholders.
  • You have excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • You are fluent in English. Working knowledge of spoken and written French will be considered an asset.
  • You have an excellent working knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Adobe Acrobat.
  • You can manage multiple databases, schedules and working groups.
  • You have strong technical troubleshooting skills and are fluent across contemporary communications modalities such as Zoom, Skype, other digital interfaces for communications.
Bonus skills you might have:
  • Experience in fundraising, managing large projects of $400,000+
  • Experience in knowledge translation, government relations or communications will be considered an asset.

The ideal candidate will be located in the region and work from the office once public health restrictions are lifted.This is a full-time contract position.
