JOB DESCRIPTION - RESIDENTIAL WORKERCoverdale Courtwork Society (Coverdale) is a non-profit charitable organization that supports women, girls and gender diverse individuals who are involved or at risk of involvement in the criminal justice system in the Halifax Regional Municipality. Coverdale delivers residential, community, youth justice and correctional services that address the needs of marginalized and criminalized persons. The society’s programs are governed by a volunteer board of directors and directly operated by a team of skilled professionals trained in the fields of social work, law, social and human services, addictions, mental health, and criminal justice.Caitlan’s Place is a community bail and supported housing program in Halifax that offers flexible and voluntary support services for women and gender diverse individuals who are experiencing poverty, mental illness, addictions, homelessness, and the criminal justice system. Coverdale understands that without access to housing and services, many people experiencing homelessness are trapped in a homelessness-jail cycle—rotating in and out of jail, detoxification centers, and emergency health care. This revolving door keeps women trapped in a cycle of crime and survival. Caitlan’s Place provides 13 single-occupied rooms, 2 emergency bail beds. shared living spaces, laundry facilities and on-site 24/7 wrap-around support services that respond to the social determinants of health. Goals: Caitlan’s Place provides community based bail and supportive housing services to women and gender diverse individuals aged 18+ who are on bail or release from provincial jail.

SummaryUnder the supervision and direction of the Director of Caitlan’s Place, the Residential Worker is responsible for the delivery of gender specific, trauma informed and restoratively driven support services to women and gender diverse individuals. This includes but is not exclusive to; intakes and discharges for the residence, crisis intervention, eviction prevention, life skills training, program delivery, community referrals, advocacy, restorative conferencing and light household duties. PurposeTo provide a community based alternative to jail for women and gender diverse individuals in the Halifax Regional Municipality. To serve as a restorative community that addresses the root causes of criminalization through the provision of housing and wrap-around services that are flexible and voluntary and grounded in harm reduction and housing first principles.Responsibilities
  • Provide intake, support, supervision and assistance to residents who may be facing multiple barriers.
  • Respond to emergency and crisis situations following appropriate procedures; ensure the safety and security of all staff and residents at all times; provide support to other staff in crisis situations.
  • Participate in individual supervision, staff meetings, case conferences, workshops and committees as required.
  • Document according to current professional standards any significant interactions with residents, maintain appropriate documentation in case files and logs, and complete incident reports when required; record the relevant status of all residents
  • Adhere to all protocols and practices and relevant policies and procedures.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff to help create and maintain a safe and supportive environment aimed at promoting and maintaining the mission, mandate, vision, values, and policies of Caitlan’s Place and the individuals it supports.
  • Maintain and promote the well-being, uniqueness, and independence of each guest of Caitlan’s Place.
  • Provide a safe, non-judgmental, and empowering environment to residents by listening to individuals and exhibiting sensitivity and concern when interacting with the residents.
  • Provide a supportive environment for residents experiencing crisis in the areas of mental health, addictions, and other areas of crisis.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Assist residents with daily living including, but not limited to arranging appointments, transportation, accessing community outreach services, and financial support as needed.
  • Maintain safety and security by monitoring all aspects of Caitlan’s Place Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensure the safety of the house by completing wellness and security checks.
  • Provide information on potential problems and assist in development of solutions and/or innovative approaches to problems.
  • Provide residents with information, advocacy, and resources.
  • Supervise and assist in the daily functions of the house, including meal preparation, chores, and work with residents to maintain a neat and clean environment.
  • Assist residents of Caitlan’s Place in orienting to communal living.
  • Handle the admission, orientation and evaluation of residents.
  • Consistently demonstrate respect and empathy for all residents.
  • Monitor the activities of the residents.
  • Maintain availability for personal, practical and moral support.
  • Accurately records day-to-day happenings.
  • Liaise with referral sources and other external agencies as needed.
  • Refer residents to a variety of community services.
  • Complete required records and maintain statistical data.
  • Provide assistance and training for new staff.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the site by completing daily shift duties as required.
  • Provide telephone support, assessment and crisis intervention.
  • Facilitate room changes, coordinating arrivals and new intakes
  • Facilitating house meetings and group programming as required.
  • Conduct an accurate and concise shift change report to oncoming shift.
  • Maintain accurate files and case notes, demonstrating appropriate, objective, professional standards of documentation in a timely manner.
  • Assist clients with storage and retrieval of medications when requested by the client.
  • Answer phone lines and direct calls as appropriate.
  • Assist clients with ordering cabs and providing cab chits as required.
  • Keep all PPE, crisis response and first aid kits stocked and document completed monthly inspections.
  • Assist with housekeeping duties as required.
  • Assist with donations and basic needs items as required.
  • Meal prepping
  • Other duties as required.
Knowledge:
  • An awareness of issues faced by women and gender diverse folks with a thorough understanding of racism, classism, sexism, homophobia and violence.
  • Commitment to the principles of social justice including recognizing the value and dignity of all persons.
  • An understanding of harm reduction principles and housing first.
  • Ability to work with clients who present with moderate to severe mental health and addictions challenges.
  • Strong crisis intervention skills.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers for HIFIS, word processing, presentations, data collection and management, email and internet.
