Position DetailsPosition InformationPosition Title Postdoctoral Fellow - Post-COVID Public Health Governance ProjectPosting Number PTAP1658PDepartment/Unit PediatricsLocation HalifaxJob Summary & Key ResponsibilitiesTechnoscience and Regulation Research Unit (www.trru.ca) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position for the Post-COVID Public Health Governance Project. This is an opportunity for an inquisitive and driven individual who is passionate about improving health outcomes for Canadians in pandemic and routine settings to contribute to an ambitious, pan-Canadian research and practice project aimed at better understanding pandemic experiences and developing an improved public health governance framework, with an emphasis on engaging with equity-deserving communities commonly left out of governance design exercises.Reporting to the PI, Dr. Janice Graham, and the Co-I, the Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) will advance our understanding of public health governance, its shortfalls and its needs, including for Indigenous and equity-seeking communities, and help craft a governance framework for a post-COVID Canada.Duties and Responsibilities

  • Focus Groups (FGs): Contribute to the design of and recruitment for FGs, preparation of FG transcripts for analysis, and analysis of transcripts for key concepts and themes (using NVivo or similar software);
  • Deliberative Engagement Design: Conduct Literature Review of deliberative engagement and anticipatory governance (with input from RA), develop taxonomy of deliberative engagement or participative governance practices, and contribute to the design of deliberative engagement and legal foresighting events and framework;
  • Deliberative Events (DEs): Jointly identify key tasks, processes, and deliverables, lead on the recruitment of participants, lead in the conduct of the DEs, ensuring that they generate data and insights that can inform the design of a new public health governance framework, and analyze DE data for key concepts, themes, areas where standards or legal guidance is needed;
  • Writing: Lead on and contribute to the development of reports, policy briefs and scholarly articles;
  • Dissemination: Assist in identifying avenues for outcome dissemination and user-community engagement, and developing material and practices for same;
  • Funding: Assist in identifying further sources of funding that will facilitate project advancement and enhancement.
Qualifications/Requirements of PositionKnowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Education:Have completed a PhD degree in a relevant field (social sciences, education or health, or related degree) between 2018 and 2022 (must have completed their PhD by the start date), with experience in fields related to critical race theories and methodologies, critical qualitative methodologies (decolonizing and resistance-centred methodologies); intersectionality, public health, decolonizing education; and critical social sciences. While the PDF may be engaged in the university community, we also welcome applicants who are professionally engaged in public health and are interested in becoming more engaged with university or community-based research.
  • Training/Experience: Have formal training in empirical social research and in analyzing qualitative data, together with experience using research software like NVivo. Proficiency in community engagement, research partnerships, qualitative and mixed methods research methodologies.
  • Interdisciplinarity: Be competent to read multiple disciplines and draw on different perspectives in pursuit of project objectives.
  • Skills: Be capable of using various academic search engines, word processing platforms (Microsoft Office, PC and Mac), research support programs (NVivo, Otter, etc). Know how to conduct a literature review, prepare associated memos for team members, and analyze data from a theoretical perspective.
  • Personal Capacities/Characteristics: The PDF must be able to:
    • communicate effectively and in a timely fashion with a wide range of people using multiple tools;
    • meet deadlines and perform tasks effectively, managing time wisely and efficiently;
    • work both independently and within a closely-knit team environment;
    • write for different audiences, including on social media platforms, advancing the project brand;
    • be respectful and flexible.
