Job Description

Dalhousie UniversityPosition Title: Research AssistantDepartment/Unit: Faculty of Computer ScienceResearch Project: Big Data and Precision Fish Farming in Nova ScotiaLocation: HalifaxPosition Type: 1 year, Full TimeSalary: $65,000/year (35 hours per week)About the Organization: “Big Data and Precision Fish Farming in Nova Scotia” involves both research partners from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as well as 3 industry partners from the fish farming industry. The main goal of this project is to develop a data architecture to efficiently store the large and constantly growing measurement data, and to build on top of this infrastructure a set of data analytics tools that can better support decision making within precision aquaculture.Job Summary: Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant (RA) will act as the main link between the industry partners and researchers; participate in the different research tasks of the project, applying a range of skills in data analytics; assist with the supervision and coordination of the different students involved in the research tasks of the project; and make significant contributions to scientific publications concerning the research.Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the work carried out by the PhD students involved in the project and assist in supervising the students, in coordination with the PIs of the project.
  • Maintain close contact with key contact points at the industry partners to ensure a tight collaboration exists between the different partners.
  • Maintain a strong culture of communication among the different partners (industry and research).
  • Implement strategies to ensure communication is effective (e.g. planning of regular meetings, sharing of information and results, making strong contributions to publications, etc.)
  • Together with the research team, participate in the implementation of the different data analytics solutions for the tasks of the project.
Required Qualifications:
  • PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics with 5 years of related experience.
  • Strong experience in working on research projects, as well as strong data science knowledge, particularly in the R or Python languages. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as leadership skills.
  • Strong team-work capabilities as well as ability to work independently.
Assets:
  • Experience in projects related to the aquaculture industry.
  • Experience in the supervision of graduate students.
