Position DetailsPosition InformationPosition Title Research Assistant – Social Sciences/HealthDepartment/Unit PediatricsResearch Project Post-COVID Public Health GovernanceLocation HalifaxPosting Number GP81-22Employee Group Grant-PaidPosition Type TemporaryDuration of Contract (if applicable) 1 year, with possibility of renewalEmployment Type Part TimeFull-time Equivalency (FTE) 0.286Salary $45,500 per annum, prorated to $13,000 based on 28.57% FTE (10 hours per week)About the OrganizationThe Technoscience and Regulation Research Unit (www.trru.ca) improves health outcomes for Canadians in pandemic and routine settings by contributing to an ambitious, pan-Canadian research and practice project aimed at better understanding pandemic experiences and developing an improved public health governance framework, with an emphasis on engaging with equity-deserving communities commonly left out of governance design exercises.Job SummaryReporting to the PI and Co-I, the Research Assistant – Social Sciences/Health (RA – SS/H) will advance our understanding of public health governance, its shortfalls and its needs, including for Indigenous and equity-seeking communities, and help craft a governance framework for a post-COVID Canada.Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct legislative and literature reviews.
  • Examine and comparatively assess existing research data.
  • Conduct policy research based on emerging questions and themes.
  • Prepare associated memos, tables/charts and reports.
  • Support participant recruitment and focus groups process.
  • Contribute to project deliverables (e.g., policy briefs, presentations, manuscripts).
NoteEvening and weekend work may be required on an exceptional basis to meet operational requirements.The RA – SS/H will need to effectively organize a large number of project participants, and will need to adjust their communication approach based on the sensitivity of individual needs and experiences, some of which may be challenging or difficult individuals.The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.QualificationsCompletion of, or currently enrolled in, a degree in a relevant field (social sciences, anthropology, health, epidemiology, women’s studies, or related degree) with experience in policy research and analysis are required. Master’s degree preferred. Applicants who are professionally engaged in public health, and who are interested in becoming more engaged with university or community-based research are encouraged to apply. Experience within a health policy environment and/or proficiency in academic and policy writing, including manuscripts for peer-review, and policy briefs is an asset. Must be proficient with both PC and Mac, as well as Microsoft Office. Strong verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills are essential. Must be able to take initiative, work both independently with minimum supervision, as well as part of a team, and complete tasks in a timely manner to meet tight deadlines.
