Job Description

You will be part of a team that provides children, youth, and adults of all ages reach feel a sense of belonging to their community.The OpportunityLiveWell is a community health exercise program intended to support well-being and on-going fitness. Livewell will guide participants through a progressive exercise strategy from Rehabilitation to Stabilization to Transition into lifelong fitness.The goal of Livewell is to help adults remain active and functionally fit within their own communities. The program is overseen by a Clinical Exercise Physiologist who can modify and adapt exercise routines to individual needs. Through education and proper modifications, participants will develop the confidence to include barrier-free exercise as part of an active lifestyle and general well-being.In the tri-county area, LiveWell in Southwest Nova Scotia will initially focus on developing delivery capacity throughout the region. The focus will be on aging adults with stable chronic conditions or an interest in preventing chronic disease through the benefits of physical activity.Responsibilities include:

  • Create a network of exercise options in Digby, Yarmouth, and Shelburne Counties (the “tri-county” area of Southwest Nova Scotia).
  • Create and delivery a marketing/outreach strategy to refer and attract participants.
  • Mentor instructors to ensure they are monitoring participants’ exercise technique, providing appropriate encouragement, creating a socially cohesive environment, and ensuring volume and intensity of exercise is appropriate for the group’s health status.
  • Determine and foster connections/relationships with resources in the tri-county area that address social determinant of health (SDH) barriers to participation in order to maximize program access. (Connections/relationships include health care professionals, recreation programmers, municipal units, seniors’ organizations, transportation cooperatives, food security organizations, social services, charities, NS Health, etc.)
  • Manage regional HCP administrative requirements for the LiveWell program including participant health outcomes and evaluation metrics
  • Work with LiveWell Senior Program Lead, regional fitness professionals and facility managers to develop options for in-person, virtual and/or blended exercise and education programs for medically stable adults managing chronic conditions
  • Work with the senior program lead to utilize a screening process to ensure safe program participation
  • With the assistance of the senior program lead, develop or evolve program opportunities as needed.
  • Liaise with relevant partners/stakeholders and accommodate research interests.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor of Kinesiology/Bachelor of Science (Kinesiology) degree (or equivalent)
  • Experience doing fitness assessment, physical activity counseling and developing/delivering exercise programs
  • An appreciation for recognizing, assessing, and supporting marginalized populations through a health promotion, social determinant of health (SDH) lens
  • Hold or pursuing CSEP-Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist qualifications is an asset
  • Experience developing and delivering exercise programs for individuals with health conditions (cardiovascular, metabolic, musculo-skeletal, and aging conditions)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Organizational experience collaborating with other individuals/organizations to create community wellness solutions
  • Ability to conduct individual fitness evaluations, health histories and program evaluations, and summarize results in reports (using data base software such as MS Excel)
  • Can train others to assist in delivering wellness programming
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and can work independently
