Job Description

Position Purpose:Working within decolonizing, survivor-centered, intersectional, and anti-oppressive frameworks, the Events & Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for overseeing all volunteer activities within the Survivor Support Centre. This includes but is not limited to arranging training and workshops, drop-in programming, tabling and outreach endeavors, and planning student events. The Coordinator will also support the Manager in designing and implementing educational resources, workshops, and research among other preventative measures and raising awareness of these issues to the DSU membership and the Dalhousie community.Principle Responsibilities:Operations and Staff:

  • Shape the vision and direction of the SSC in conjunction with the DSU Executive, Director of Research and Outreach, SSC Manager, Part-Time Staff and Volunteers.
  • Assist the SSC Manager in ensuring the gathering of data and feedback on SSC services and operations through formal and informal surveys, focus groups, community consultations, and other means as identified.
  • Coordinate and support all volunteer-related activities including but not limited to regular check-in meetings, planning and development of events, projects, and programming, redevelopment of training and workshop modules, as well as debriefing with volunteers as necessary.
  • Assist the SSC Manager in implementing a volunteer care program to ensure all volunteers and staff of the Centre are supported in their contributed emotional labour.
Service Provision:
  • Provide immediate and ongoing support and advocacy for survivors of sexualized and/or gender-based violence when appropriate.
  • Continued education surrounding sexualized and/or gender-based violence from various lenses with aim to share this knowledge with volunteers and students.
  • Support the development of peer support, mental health, debriefing activities and programming for DSU membership on an ongoing basis.
Advocacy:
  • Stay updated on community issues related to sexualized and/or gender-based violence.
  • Support the SSC Manager in working with Dalhousie campus and community partners to create and redevelop complementary services.
  • Running SSC’s social media accounts to share information on upcoming events and programming, advocacy and activism efforts, as well as developing and disseminating content varying from education, self-care & wellness, resource navigation, etc.
Education:
  • Assist the SSC Manager in developing and facilitating both public and internal education workshops and initiatives for the SSC Staff and Volunteers, as well as DSU Executives, Staff, Societies and Members.
  • Assist the SSC Manager in facilitating and coordinating volunteer training for service programs of the SSC.
  • Support the SSC Manager and the Union’s Executive members in event planning.
Perform other job-related duties as directed by the Manager.Qualifications:
  • Ongoing degree in social work or other ongoing relevant post-secondary education and/or combination of training, education, and experience (current Dalhousie or King’s student).
  • Demonstrable specialized knowledge of sexualized violence from various viewpoints including but not limited to lived experience, academic studies, work/placement experience, etc.
  • Knowledge of Dalhousie University/Nova Scotia-specific Sexualized Violence Policy and procedures an asset.
  • Previous experience in organizing, planning, training development and facilitation, and/or coordination roles an asset.
  • Previous experience and/or formal training in providing support to survivors of sexualized violence an asset.
  • Understanding of decolonizing, survivor-centered, intersectional, and anti-oppressive practices and approaches in relation to sexualized violence and abuse for all persons an asset.
  • Experience with community engagement and relationship building an asset.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills.
  • Experience advocating for survivor-centered sexualized violence initiatives an asset.
  • Well organized, flexible, self-motivated, able to work and make decisions independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Graphic design skills an asset.
  • Highly adaptable and solution-oriented.
  • Experience working with diverse communities.
