Our 6,000 faculty and staff foster a vibrant, purpose-driven community, that celebrated 200 years of academic excellence in 2018.Job SummaryDalhousie’s initio Technology and Innovation Law Clinic opened in March, 2020. The Clinic is operated by the Schulich School of Law and provides early-stage start-ups with access to legal advice, information, and services. The Clinic’s staff and students collaborate with other support services in the innovation ecosystem in Nova Scotia to provide much needed assistance to entrepreneurs starting high-growth companies.Key Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Director of the Law and Technology Institute at the Schulich School of Law, the Staff Lawyer will provide legal advice and services to early-stage companies in the areas of corporate law, intellectual property law, and technology law.
  • The Staff Lawyer will work directly with other entities in the innovation ecosystem in Nova Scotia.
  • Working closely with the Instructor of Record for the clinical advocacy law course, the Staff Lawyer will mentor and supervise an articled clerk and senior law students, and participate in the evaluation of student performance.
  • This position requires some business development activities, including presentations to early-stage start-up groups in the community.
NoteThe successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.QualificationsPracticing member of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, or eligible for admission in a short time frame, with at least five year’s experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience) is required. Corporate law experience is essential. Experience in intellectual property and/or technology law would be a definite asset.
