Job Description

Job PostingHalifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the seasonal position of Summer Outdoor Day Camp & Overnight Camp Coordinator with Adventure Earth Programs in Recreation Programming, Parks & Recreation.   • Supervise staff, youth leaders, and participants in outdoor day camps and/or overnight camp settings under the supervision of the Community Outdoor Recreation Coordinators
  • Confidently set up sites, deliver programs, and oversee staff and volunteers according to program manuals, content, and delivery methods
  • Manage risks and oversee staff, volunteer and participant safety at all times
  • Organize, manage and maintain equipment and supplies
  • Plan and facilitate program specific staff and youth leader training
  • Facilitate goal setting, supervision and support, feedback, and evaluations for all staff including completion of evaluations for each at the end of the summer
  • Supervise and support staff and youth leaders in behaviour guidance, use of equipment and supplies, and manage equipment inventories
  • Plan and facilitate team building, social events and recognition for staff
  • Ensure maintenance of the Adventure Earth Centre’s core values
  • Prepare mail outs, plan and lead orientation nights, schedule and support out trips, support and appropriately deal with the unique needs of supervising children and youth in an overnight setting
  • Support the Community Outdoor Recreation Coordinators and Program Coordinator in handling administrative duties such as registering participants, sending program mail outs, networking with community groups and organizations, organizing special events, submitting regular reports, tracking and inputting statistics and maintaining a budget
  • Assist in designing curriculum and supporting persons with disabilities in program
  • Update program manuals and write an end of season report
  • Schedule guest speakers
QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience:
  • Current certification in Wilderness Remote First Aid (valid through to August 26, 2022)
  • Must hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Experience leading preschoolers/children/youth in an outdoor and/or environmental education recreational setting
  • Previous experience in an overnight camp setting
  • Previous experience working day camps and/or overnight camps at the Adventure Earth Programs
  • Managerial/supervisory experience an asset
  • Current National Lifeguard Service certification an asset
  • Canoeing/kayaking certification an asset
  • Experience in designing outdoor environmental program curriculum an asset
  • Studies in Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Education, or similar courses an asset
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of outdoor skills and experience in outdoor activities
  • Understanding of Healthy Childhood Development
Pre-Employment Requirement: Halifax Regional Municipality has a Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination Policy which requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination is a condition of employment. Proof of full vaccination is not required at time of application but will be verified prior to the commencement of employment. Human Resources will notify you when proof of vaccination is required.Additional Conditions of Employment:
  • Applicants must be willing to obtain WHMIS training
  • Applicants must be available to attend all orientations/training sessions (dates subject to change):
    • April 6: 6:30pm – 8:30pm (virtual)
    • May 4: 6:30pm – 8:30pm (virtual)
    • April 30 :9:00am – 5:00pm
    • May 7: 9:00am – 5:00pm
    • June 3 – 5 (weekend)
    • June 28, 29 and 30: 9:00am – 5:00pm
  • Copies of certification must be submitted upon hiring
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants must complete screening through the Child Abuse Registry Check and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion. Interviews, testing, and in-person recruitment activities are being conducted in adherence with current COVID-19 Public Health protocols.COMPETENCIES: Analytical Thinking, Communications, Customer Service, Decision Making, Developing Others, Organization and Planning, Risk Management, Teamwork and Cooperation, Values and Ethics, and Valuing DiversityWORK STATUS: Casual, seasonal (approximately April 25, 2022 to August 26, 2022)HOURS OF WORK:Day Camp CoordinatorsDuring May/ and June, work hours are 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday (35 paid hours per week). During July and August, day-camp hours are 8:30 to 4:30 Monday to Friday (40 paid hours per week).Overnight Camp CoordinatorThe Overnight Camp Coordinator will be living and working full-time at Camp Mockingee during the dates listed below and will be compensated with additional hours as determined by the AEC’s procedure.
  • Staff training: July 5 – 8
  • Sunship 1: July 8 – 13
  • Sunship 2: July 16 – 21
  • LEAD: July 25 – 29
SALARY: Non-Union; $18 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay).WORK LOCATION: Adventure Earth-Shubie Park (54 Locks Road, Dartmouth); Adventure Earth-Fleming Park (68 Parkhill Road, Halifax); Adventure Earth- Camp Mockingee (168 Smeltzer Rd, Windsor).
