Job Description

Survivor Support VolunteersVolunteer Position – Kjipuktuk in Mi’kma’ki (Halifax, Nova Scotia)About the Survivor Support Centre (SSC):The Survivor Support Centre supports students at Dalhousie that are impacted by sexualized violence, gender-based violence, and/or commercial sexual exploitation. The office engages in advocacy, education, and policy development ranging from DSU to provincial tables with the hope of bringing attention to the sexualized violence epidemic in Nova Scotia, specifically in relation to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) across Mi’kma’ki. The Survivor Support Centre strives to be at the forefront of conversations on campus addressing the need for more accessible education and knowledge sharing on issues related to sexualized violence, safer & healthy relationships, and healing-centred practices.Volunteer Responsibilities:Working within decolonial, intersectional, and anti-oppressive frameworks, Survivor Support Centre (SSC) volunteers may have the opportunity to provide support to fellow Dalhousie and/or King’s students impacted by sexualized and/or gender-based violence through the Sexual Assault and Harassment Phone Line (SAHPL). Volunteers will also have opportunities to organize events of their own, create educational resources, operate social media channel(s), serve as Active Listeners at events, and participate in additional tasks as they arise within the Survivor Support Centre.When applying for this position, please clarify if you are looking to volunteer with SSC’s office in general and/or are wanting to join the team of volunteers operating the Sexual Assault and Harassment Phone Line. Volunteers will have the option to join in with the phone line throughout the year if they have completed all the training (dates TBD). Please do not worry about committing all your time to the phone line, as regular breaks from frontline work is encouraged within the office. Volunteers with the phone line will be given specific support by the manager in navigating triggers, burnout, compassion fatigue, self-care & self-sustainability, and/or any other concerns.Qualifications:

  • Must be a Dalhousie or King’s student currently enrolled with second year standing or higher for Fall 2022 (exceptions can be made for mature students and/or graduate students)
  • Must be prepared to engage with in-depth conversations surrounding difficult and heavy subject manner including sexualized violence, gender-based violence, colonization, rape culture, human trafficking, and other related topics.
    • Support and debriefing opportunities will always accompany these conversations, as volunteers’ well-being & personal sustainability are of the utmost importance to the Manager
  • Must complete all required Training and Workshops as requested by SSC’s Manager (no payment required for any session)
  • Must be able to attend at least 2 monthly meetings per semester to support various programs, projects, and events offered through SSC
  • Must be able to regularly check-in with Manager if operating the phone line to ensure a healthy balance between offering and receiving support
