Requisition ID: 136153Opportunity Type: TemporaryPosting Close Date: June 29About This OpportunityNova Scotia Health is the largest provider of health services in Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Health (NSH) Trauma Program leads collaboration with tertiary/quaternary, regional, and community sites to ensure a highly efficient, effective, and integrated trauma care system for all Nova Scotians. To support the care of trauma patients across Nova Scotia, our program is excited to share an opportunity for physician specialists to be a part of an expanding inpatient trauma consult service within the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre (QEII).Under the supervision of the Senior Medical Director, NSH Trauma Program of Care, the Trauma Consultant provides leadership and expertise on the resuscitation of trauma patients, facilitates admission to the QEII, and provides longitudinal care for all trauma inpatients until discharge. The Trauma Consultant works closely with a dedicated Trauma Nurse Specialist to collaborate with nursing, pharmacy, house staff, attending physicians, patient families and other members of the health care team to develop and implement the overall patient care plan for admitted trauma patients.ResponsibilitiesClinical responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • coordinating trauma consultations from across Nova Scotia and other Maritime provinces.
  • leading trauma team resuscitations in the QEII ED.
  • facilitating admissions to various surgical services and the ICU at the QEII.
  • providing daily assessments and active management of trauma inpatients at the QEII.
Additional expectations include:
  • responding to urgent or emergent trauma patient care needs
  • arranging laboratory and radiologic investigations; facilitating consultation with and between services; and completion of daily medical record notes and discharge summaries.
  • the Trauma Consultant and the Trauma Nurse Specialist to lead a virtual follow-up clinic and foster quality and research initiatives on behalf of the Trauma Program.
  • the Trauma Consultant will also supervise residents, medical students, nurses, and other health care providers and provide educational sessions under the direction of the Senior Medical Director.
Other responsibilities include:
  • participating in trauma program development, including authoring and reviewing documents such as, but not exclusively, order sets, clinical pathways, and standard operating procedures.
  • participating in quality reviews and mortality rounds.
  • lead educational courses.
These responsibilities are meant to indicate the job responsibilities and duties and are not inclusive. Performance evaluations will be conducted annually by the Senior Medical Director. Successful candidates must be prepared to reduce the other clinical responsibilities to fulfil the expectations of this position.Qualifications
  • all applicants must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS) (http://cpsns.ns.ca/definedlicense.aspx)
  • coverage with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), or proof of alternative coverage
  • all specialists must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)
  • all applicants must have a current ATLS Certification
  • Experience and expertise in the management of inpatients within a large organization
  • Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills
  • Mental, visual and physical demand – High; must be able to deal with stressful situations
Preferred Qualifications
  • Significant experience as a Trauma Team Leader is an asset.
  • Experience as a resident trauma team leader is an asset
  • Experience in inpatient trauma management in systems outside Nova Scotia is an asset
  • ATLS instructor status is an asset
  • Specific trauma training, including dedicated trauma fellowship or equivalent, is an asset
  • Demonstrated experience in successful program development is an asset
  • Expertise in crisis resource management. Formal coursework is an asset
