Our 6,000 faculty and staff foster a vibrant, purpose-driven community, that celebrated 200 years of academic excellence in 2018.Job SummaryReporting to the Grounds and Horticulture Supervisor, Central Stores Supervisor, or designate, Vehicle Operators are expected to drive University transport vehicles and transfer equipment, materials, supplies and Facilities Management staff between campus buildings and to/from sites off campus as required.Key Responsibilities

  • Delivers material and supplies between and within University buildings and to off-site locations, as required
  • Delivers/collects equipment and materials to/from Trades Services, Zones, Environmental Services, and Project sites
  • Assists grounds keeping staff in the case of snow shovelling and ice control requirements and other circumstances as required
  • Participates in scheduled vehicle maintenance procedures as required
  • Monitors vehicle operating condition utilizing scheduled check lists
  • Operates vehicle in safe, responsible and lawful manner
  • Performs small office moves and furniture rearrangement throughout the campus buildings
  • Transports and arranges tables and chairs for exams and other special functions
  • Dismantles desks as required
  • Collects recyclables as per the University’s waste management/recycling program
  • Transports specialized wastes to an appropriate location
  • Provides a delivery service between Dalhousie University libraries and other metro universities and libraries
  • Performs other duties as required
NoteIncumbent is expected to lift heavy materialsDue to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus. Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.Required Qualifications
  • Current relevant and related experience required
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Nova Scotia driver’s license, and provide an up-to-date driver’s abstract
  • Industry experience to operate large fleet vehicles up to 5 tonnes (GWT), as required
  • Knowledge of the campus layout and the Halifax Regional Municipality area are essential
  • Must be physically fit and able to lift heavy items
  • Ability to take direction and to work with minimal supervision
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Must be willing to work overtime, as required
  • General safety and WHMIS training an asset
